take her pants off, grease her up and pound away ..... Canzoneri was a slickster but Duran's relentless presuure would outpoint him 9-6 Duran,
Canzoneri's power was near nowhere as Duran's. I dont know exactly that Roberto would win this fight but that is something to take into consideration.
Canzozeri had some elite skills as well as ring IQ. A unique talent. He would be one to consider having a chance to beat Duran at his lightweight best.
Canzoneri was skilled but went back and forth with a pressure fighter like Ross, Duran is arguably 1 Ross and 2 Armstrong stacked into one so yeah.
Yes he was. I don't know what Tony's gameplan would be other than counterpunch. The best plan vs Duran@135 was run.
I think best for best Duran takes a close but great fight. Duran wouldn't be able to really hurt him imo. Iirc Canzi was only ever stopped once, in his final bout against Bummy Davis (huge puncher) whilst shot at 147. In a three fight series Canzoneri is absolutely taking one imo. Dare I say the sacrilegious opinion that Duran has become slightly overrated H2H at the 135 - 140 range. There is a list of fighters here who are both great H2H and have resumes that are as good if not better than Duran's around that weight range. Some of the talk about Duran just running through people lately is exaggerated.
I have both soundly in my top 25 fighters of all time.. Canzoneri was a brilliant counterpuncher, superb reflexes, versatile, and a slick.. but i also think that Duran has a solid case for being the greatest lightweight of all time.. Benny Leonard maybe, its close.. I'd edge Duran but helluva matchup
I would say the smart money would be on Duran in a close fight as I would rank Duran #1 all time lightweight. Once Duran moved up in weight he was still a great fighter but not as great as a lightweight. Duran did have trouble with slick boxers such as Dejesus I, Viruet, Lampkin so Canzoneri would give him lots of problems but Duran's power wins out in the end.
Again, Duran might've been able to wear out Canzoneri but not knocking him out. Some says he was weak to slicksters, but Duran had enough class in him to give Canzoneri a rushdown Barney Ross style.
I like Canzoneri to nick a decision in a one off but a series would be amazing. Canzoneri would be easily the best lightweight Duran had faced, also the best defensively and he has underrated power. If DeJesus could knock Duran down twice, Canzoneri could time a perfect counter onto Duran too. That doesn’t mean he’d stop Duran but he’d have Duran thinking about what to throw. This is a tight decision fight whichever way it goes.
