Ray was not great when he fought Duran the first time? Are you hearing yourself? In Roy’s previous fight he dominated 38-0 ATG Wilfredo Benitez...he was absolutely great in 1980..smack in the middle of his prime
Also add fighting champions Hector Camacho and Vinny Pazienza to virtual stand stills in their first bouts while well past forty years of age .. and losing a close decision to all time great Marvin Hagler at age 33 .. how many natural lightweights pulled a comparable move ? My top five all time P4P is Charles Langford Greb Robinson Fitz Duran is certainly top ten.
I would only put Gans ahead of him at LW (although I'd certainly not argue against Leonard). P4P I think he's top ten: 1 Robinson 2 Langford 3 Greb 4 Armstrong 5 Ali 6 Fitzsimmons 7 Gans 8 Pep 9 Duran 10 Charles
I'm sorry but that is a massive case of revisionism. Dismissing one of the great wins in boxing history at ANY weight is just silly. People are always wise after the fact but Leonard was the favourite coming in and that was against a Duran who was 71-1 and unbeaten for 8 years. That's because Leonard was already considered a bona fide superstar and pretty untouchable at WW. So what Duran managed to do in that fight was upset the odds and put in one of the all-time great performances. You cannot just dismiss that.
Duran is a pretty solid top 10 all-time p4p. If people rate him top 15 only or as high as top 5 I don't have a problem with that either way. For me, though, he'd be around 6 or 7.
I am absolutely hearing myself. What is the difference between Holyfield when he first fought Qawi and Pernell when he fought Remirez, compared to a few fights later. Do you guys realize fighters get better and reach a greater level. You guys have to hear yourselves. You cannot make a fighters wins greater than they are just to satisfy your argument. Ray was the mirror image of Benitez in his own wording, and he gutted it out and it was a great win, which probably explained why he thought he could do that again with Duran-so your argument almost proves the point. That was a great win, but you don't gut out wins against Duran on the inside. He should have boxed. Later he learned each fighter has a specific style, and he fought differently against Hearns and Duran,,, in the 2nd Duran fight.
Ray Leonard had some good wins over contenders even before he even faced Benitez, so he was seasoned and proven already. I don't consider him quite as great as many here do though, historically speaking, on the "all time" lists.
I'm with you on this .. He didn't have enough fights for me and took all that time off .. He was the Draw so he had the luxury and went about it the way he did and was smart about it .. for what he was in it for ..( that's my take on it, others may disagree) .. Not really a fan of the non active peoples fighters who hold all the chips and advantages .. Floyd included
He defeated prime versions of Wilfred Benitez, Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and he ended the reign of Marvin Hagler after a 3 year layoff. He is as proven as anyone in history
Maybe not but that doesn't mean I can't see Whitaker, Chavez and Arguello all beating Duran at lightweight which was what my point was.
