Duran was such a beast at 135 ... he fought for so long after and above the weight many seem to forget just how physically gifted he was at his best weight ... most of his opponents in his title defenses were solid if not great fighters ... to me it was the way Duran dominated them ... he really was a marvel.
Underdiscussed is Duran beating the daylights outta Mamby. Freddie Brown was bitchin up a storm about Roberto half ass training but he won going away.
Lightening Ray Lampkin was a good boxer and he had confidence his style could beat Duran,,and through the first 11 rounds it looked like he had a decent shot. Ray would take a half step back from the ever coming forward Roberto and after Duran missed again and again Ray would counter with a left hook to the side. This was the pattern of the fight and it held until Ray started to tire in the championship rounds. The shot Duran put him out cold with would have missed a few rounds before.
A pretty good standard of lightweights. Roberto Duran would have excelled in any era though. At that weight he was awesome......!
For my money, his performance in the third De Jesus fight was his best. Closely followed by the first Sugar Ray Leonard fight.
