I'm pitting the Roberto Duran that turned up to earn his 4th divisional world title against the Kelley Pavlik who come back from a disastrous start to dethrone then Middleweight king, Jermain Taylor. I'll reserve judgement for now, but I'll say that I don't consider this to be a mismatch or a joke fight, not at all.

    Opinions?

    I kinda think it's a mismatch.

    I disagree, Boxed Ears.

Kelly Pavlik has literally never fully impressed me with his skill set. I don't consider him to be a good boxer, and I think his power might be overstated...certainly nothing drastically more devastating than the power Iran Barkley possessed.

You think Pavlik struggles to be competitive with Hands of Stone?

Pavlik only has size imo, maybe that's enough, maybe not. Purely on a styles basis, Duran eats them fighters. Pavlik does have some degree of skill from the waist up purely on offence, a decent body attack, a good uppercut and a bit of a thudding jab. He's hardly tooled up for this job. I just reckon the skill would shine through as the bout progresses, the shoulder rolls, the accuracy, the defence, all that stuff. Would likely be close though, and a tough fight.

Yes. Pavlik is a good fighter but he's not "Hearnsing" Duran, and I cannot see him outpointing him either. If we're taking that good, motivated version of Duran, that is. I say he's not fit to do it. Not on his best day, so far. And I think his best days are likely behind him.

Pavlik's not a great fighter. I liked him and all that, it was kinda exciting when he beat Taylor and i thought he would go on to do better than what happened. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, it's easy to say now that Hopkins would beat Pavlik all day, but at the time i didn't expect that to happen, not the way it did.

I always come away from Barkley/Duran thinking that one of the fighters really demonstrated some serious skill and ability, whereas the other just did a half decent job at imposing his size and strength. There are instances in that fight, many of them, where Duran is really clowning Barkley, showing him up with right hand counters and upper body movement. I used to have a .gif of Duran dodging 3-4 consecutive jabs moving just his head, and then returning fire with a right hand.

I can see the same thing happening here. Pavlik isn't very mobile, he needs to set himself before he can really do some decent offensive work of his own, and I just see Duran always making subtle movements to offset the bigger man. I see periods of this fight, much like with Barkley, where Duran demonstrates the wide disparity in skill. Probably an 7-5, 8-4 decision...with the majority of Duran's rounds being won convincingly.

I rarely get it right...but I knew Hopkins would win virtually every round against Kelly Pavlik. I'm not certain why I had that feeling...but Hopkins was wonderful on the night.

Just watching Inglorious Basterds now for the first time, it was stupid at the start i thought but it's good.

I was inches away from putting my student loan down on it. But I decided against it. I made my feelings known in many threads ahead of the fight, like I said...I usually get it wrong, but I felt Pavlik was made to order to someone as technically proficient as Hopkins.
