Question for the Italian speakers: can you understand Spanish without any background in it? It seems a lot of Italians here speak Spanish.

I'm not Italian, but as someone who is fluent in Spanish, I can understand a lot of Italian, not all of it but a great deal. Some words are the same just pronounced a little different, some word contain the same root, while others are totally different. So I'm sure Italians can understand a great deal of Spanish as well. Specially when spoken slowly. Reading it is easier to understand. :good
I find the best way to communicate with people of a different language is to talk really slow,with a raised voice,hands waving in their face. Works,too - how else would you explain the swift smack across the chops? It always gets a reaction.
It's always good to pick up another language. I've been picking up Portuguese since very similar as well, French is a little tougher mainly due to their pronunciation and they do have very diffent words.
Of course, italians created the spanish language. Latin was created in rome, comes from the town latini
