Question for the Italian speakers: can you understand Spanish without any background in it? It seems a lot of Italians here speak Spanish.

I'm not Italian, but as someone who is fluent in Spanish, I can understand a lot of Italian, not all of it but a great deal. Some words are the same just pronounced a little different, some word contain the same root, while others are totally different. So I'm sure Italians can understand a great deal of Spanish as well. Specially when spoken slowly. Reading it is easier to understand. :good

I find the best way to communicate with people of a different language is to talk really slow, with a raised voice, hands waving in their face.

Works, too - how else would you explain the swift smack across the chops? It always gets a reaction.

It's always good to pick up another language. I've been picking up Portuguese since very similar as well, French is a little tougher mainly due to their pronunciation and they do have very diffent words.
