roberto duran sparring with nigel benn

Excellent spar, duran`s defence & balls are top notch, benn is a natural mwt/super-mwt + roberto is at least 36 yrs old.

 

Thought those of you that came to this thread about Duran sparring, might appreciate this:

When Roberto Duran was training to fight Carlos Palomino at Madison Square Garden, he worked-out at Howard Albert's gym, an old factory loft in the Garment Center, a few blocks from the new Garden.
It was summertime, and sweltering. Every Latino worker in the area-- and their families -- watched their hero train at lunchtime.

The gym was a steam room -- jammed cheek-to-jowl with the adoring. They pressed so close Duran barely had room for floor exercises. When he was done, he jumped in the ring to shadow box.

Spanning what looked like a crowded subway car, you could see chests swell – faces beaming with pride. Plump mothers holding babies in their arms stood at the ring apron, while their little ones looked up saucer-eyed at this God.

In the midst of this outpouring of love, somebody in the back -- unbelievably! -- kept shouting at Duran in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!

Duran paid him no mind and continued to shadow box. But the heckler was relentless: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU!”

Finally, Duran fixed him with a glare, stretched as far over the ropes as he could -- just above the glowing faces of mothers and tykes -- and yanked down his trunks, grabbed a hand-full and roared in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS CAN SUCK MY ****!”

 

I have footage on video of Duran sparring with Benn. Its different from the footage just posted via youtube. The footage I have also contains Duran doing various floor exercises, doing the speedbag, also some very good head hitting on the speedbag as well.

Duran holds back more with Benn on the footage I have. Its from 1988 when Duran visited the Uk.

 

Anyone have Duran and Errol Christie sparring?.

Not sure if it was filmed as well.

 

Duran, the fighter, was so very comfortable in punching range. He seemed to sport a separate set of eyes on the side of his head as he let harmful hooks passively sail by his head and shoulders by the slightest of margins.

Despite Benns youth and keenness to press, he is left to look silly on several occasion due to Duran’s exceptional mastery of anticipation and judgement.

 

Yes. Relaxation is the key. It's that smugness of Duran that makes Benn pause here. It's not a serious 'I'm gonna hurt you' kind of thing anyway, but you can kind of sense Benn's lack of willingness to get in and mix it up too much. Maybe it's something to do with respecting the old man and what he did, and maybe because he was still a slippery ******* and didn't want to look too stupid.

Duran had very good upper body movement despite being fat.

You'd have to be gay to not get turned on by the idea of Benn and Duran in the ring together.

 

Duran humiliated Benn in the second round. He really did.

 

Duran from the mid-70s on had the best headmovement ever.

 

You may be right, as long as he concentrated on avoiding punches. Sometimes his efforts were more focused on dishing out the damage.

 

Keep in mind that it is sparring and it isn't all-out. Duran's wearing headgear and Benn is not -which means that Duran was working sharpening up on defense with some obligatory offense. Benn was not eating the shots he would have had it been a straight-up Philadelphia sparring session.
