I suppose this fantasy fight has probably been talked over a number of times on these boards, but I am curious to know what everyone thinks because every time I try to work out a prediction, I change my mind.

It's pretty clear to me that Roberto Duran is one of the greatest lightweights of all time. No revelation there. In addition to being one of the hardest men in ring history, Duran was slick and clever in his prime years at 135-pounds, deceptively defensively astute on the inside, quicker than anyone thought. However, at lightweight, Duran was still vulnerable not neccessarily to pure boxing, but to a combination of hard, accurate punching that threw him off balance and speedy movement that kept him off balance. The great illustration of this is his first career loss to Esteban DeJesus...fought just above the lightweight limit.

Alexis Arguello had the speed and stamina and concentration in his lightweight prime to, maybe, use his reach advantage and explosive left hook to enact some version of that plan against Duran. The right hand lead might also have been an effective weapon. But, of course, Arguello was a warrior cut from the same cloth as Duran, so maybe it turns into Duran's kind of war and he wins. Maybe Duran loses at his own game getting careless.

There are a lot of magnificent intangibles that made both men impossible to count out...even way past their best. Those intangibles collide here.

Do you think Duran has the power to stop Arguello in an early firefight? Vice versa?

Can Duran outbox Arguello without letting his advantages slip away? Vice versa?

What do you make of this one?

It's a question I never take the same path to solve twice.

Duran by KO..Duran was a best at 135 and I thinke he coulda stopped him in 14...If it was a 12 round fight than I'll take Roberto by wide UD! Roberto had the tools to beat Arguello...Duran was a lil bigger also and that would play right into him beating Arguello

I would not predict a Duran win with absolute certainty, but Alexis was a bit past his best at 135. Duran was an absolute beast at the weight. I think that's the difference, and would ultimately determine the outcome. I can't think of a single thing that Duran did not do WAY better than Mancinni, and Ray gave Alexis a hell of a fight at 135. I will always think that it was a cryin' damn shame that Arguello did not take care of business against Fernandez the way he normally did. If he would have, we wouldn't have to play speculative guessing games.

Roberto Duran chases the powerful but stiff as hell Alexis Arguello outta the ring somewhere around the 11th or 12th rd. for a thrilling fight / KO!!

Arguello turned pro as a 16 year old featherweight. His first fight with Pryor at 140 was his 82nd prize fight. It still took a coked up Aaron Pryor 14 rounds to stop him. No way in hell would Duran stop him at 135 in 11 or 12 rounds. And when, exactly, did Arguello become a back foot fighter?

Arguello would time Duran with some lovely shots and hurt him like no one else at 135, but Duran was in his prime at 135 lbs, and Alexis was in his prime at 130.

I say the fight is close going into the 13th with both guys hurt on numerous occasions, but Arguello is on survival mode for the last two rounsd and Duran wins a close but clear decision.

I'd take Duran by late rounds stoppage. The styles favor him, and quite simply, he was a better fighter than Arguello.

Duran would wipe the floor with Arguello. This would not even be a fight imo. Duran was only taken out by a peak Hearn's, and he fought Hearns at Hearn's best weight imo. Arguello would not be able to keep Duran off him.

I think this is the most likely scenario.

Roberto Duran was too quick and forceful for Arguello at 135 all the way......... Arguello was accurate and powerful, but also slow of hands and feet..... Arguello stood straight as an arrow for the most part.... Alexis Arguello was great, but not as diversified as Duran....... Duran KO's Arguello before rd. 13............ Peace........

Don't you ever forget the beast that Duran used to be at 135...ever! That is a sin for any boxing fan to forget.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one. I can see a TKO late in the 14th or in the 15th. A clean, lights out, type KO? Very unlikely. A TKO? Maybe, but no sooner than late in the 14th.

Aaron Pryor is WAY overrated........... Pryor was in his prime from 1980 to 1983........ Pryor also KO'd a buncha' "Ho-Hum" type of contenders and pretenders, too......... Not only that, But Aaron Pryor was sloppy as all hell in his attack and easy to hit..... Pryor only beat Alexis Arguello 2 X because he was younger and more solid and comfortable at 140 pounds........ Alexis Arguello never proved to be able to hang with the World-Class guys above 135 pounds...... Arguello's biggest win above 135 pounds is his KO over Billy "Glass-Jaw" Costello at welterweight in 1986.......

I would not even rule out an early to mid rounds ko for Duran. Arguello came to 135, Duran has been there reigning for 6 years. I liken this fight to Gomez-Zarate. People forget how ferocious Duran used to be lol.
