I am pretty new here so this dream matchup may have already been discussed. Duran is one guy I can see really troubling Pernell. Whitaker was so good at neutralizing his opponents but Duran was STRONG at 135lbs. This one is hard to call but I could see Duran trapping Whitaker for stretches with a brutal body attack and eaking out a close decision. What to you guys think?
I recently watched Whitaker against Haugen and then I watched Duran vs De Jesus III, and I came away thinking the level of intensity between the two fights was huge in favour of Duran's fight. Despite the knock down of Haugen, I really didn't see anything that would have troubled Duran in his prime. I think he would more than eek out a decision, I think if he were to trap him for stretches, as you put it, he could very well knock him out. I'm sure others will disagree with that assessment. But if you can't hurt Duran you're not stopping him, and even if you do hurt him, you'd have to knock him out before he'd quite and his chin and defense were just too good for that at 135.
Of all the fantasy fights we see regularly, this is the one that deserves the deepest ****ysis. I'm not going to bother, but rather point out that judges tend to favour the most visible possible aggression. So I think Duran snaps up a couple of close rounds on aggression and gets the nod.
Duran got to you sooner or later...you could run but not hide against a prime hands of stone ...Duran UD or late stop
Excellent point. Whitaker has failed to impress judges on a few occasions, even when he was well deserving of their support and Duran would be the wrong person to do this against. I see Roberto pounding out a decision based on shear aggression and persistence.
