Its only 10 rounds, its hard to get 30 minutes worth of this quality to me. Just a couple of fights before the brawl in Montreal. Durans fight showed some people he could be competitive with Leonard. For those who don't know (I'm sure if your on the classic forum you know enough about Duran) Palamino was a few fights removed from having the 147 title. Beaten classy boxers such as John Stracey and Davey Boy Green as well as having a solid performance against a phenom in Benetiz. Tought Mexican who I would rank around the Daniel Zaragoza's and Jose Luis Castillo's of the world without problem. When he retired he was simialair to the guy in his prime- this was a number one, world class contender who Duran beat. Just a awesome performance from a youngish Duran. Really worked him over in the clinch and while Palomino got his shots in (as he had to considering how Duran kept his head on his chest) whenever he loaded up Duran dodged. His highlights in the fight may be a couple of straights connecting but thats it- the jolting uppercuts looked more impressive with Duran's long hair flying evreywere- they had no effect. Just a performance showing the gap between a legend and bordeline great. This was the kind of fight Palomini tended to like yet he won mabye one round against a guy he was bigger than and should have been physically stronger than. Despite this he was dropped (for the second time in his career) and laid into by a awesome performance by Duran. Whilst Leonard is a few steps up from Palomini, this is still probably Duran's most complete performance to me. He just dominated a world class fighter and somehow made ascrappy fight look beautiful (to me at least, I love seeing someone combine aggression with defence, the end of the second round personifies this style). Thoughts on the fight and performance?
This was one of Duran´s best performances. I love this fight. He had the complete package there the skill, the speed, the defence, the tenacaty, the power. Everything there.
I have it on tape from way back.... Duran as a welterweight was still too ferocious for the timid Palomino up in New York back in June of '79... Duran basically won every round and even dropped Palomino late in the fight... Duran W10 Palomino... MR.BILL
What a performance, he's one of the best fighters ever, and i don't use that term lightly. It cracks me up how anyone can have anything but love for Roberto Duran.
What strikes me about this fight is that you just know that Palomino is a world class fighter, he is fast and has a strong solid jab. And has ton of heart&grit Amazing how Duran simply steamrolled passed Palomino and made him look like a B level fighter.
Since the thread's about the Duran-Palomino bout -- for those that haven't read it-- thought you might enjoy this incident: When Roberto Duran was training to fight Carlos Palomino at Madison Square Garden, he worked out at Howard Albert's gym, an old factory loft in the Garment Center. It was summertime, and sweltering. Every Latino worker in the area-- and their families -- watched their hero train at lunchtime. The gym was a steam room -- jammed cheek-to-jowl with the adoring. They pressed so close Duran barely had room for floor exercises. When he was done, he jumped in the ring to shadow box. Spanning what looked like a crowded subway car, you could see chests swell faces beaming with pride. Plump mothers holding babies in their arms stood at the ring apron, while their little ones looked up saucer-eyed at this God. In the midst of this outpouring of love, somebody in the back -- unbelievably! -- kept shouting at Duran in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! Duran paid him no mind and continued to shadow box. But the heckler was relentless: "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! "PIPINO CUEVAS WILL KILL YOU! Finally, Duran fixed him with a glare, stretched as far over the ropes as he could -- just above the glowing faces of mothers and toddlers -- and yanked down his trunks, grabbed his nuts and roared in Spanish: "PIPINO CUEVAS CAN SUCK MY ****!
What kills Duran's rep in the eyes of fans under age 35 is that Duran fought on WAY too long in his career that spanned from 1967-2001... Had Duran retired from the ring in 1989 at age 37 after decisioning Iran Barkley for the WBC middleweight title, or at least saying good bye after losing to SRL in the suck-ass rubber match of Dec. 1989, Duran's rep would sit better today with several harsh critics who love to rag on Duran for whatever reasons... Duran was a mockery of himself in the 1990s. However, his first fight with Vinny Paz of 1994 and his robbery loss to Hector Camacho in 1996 kinda' smoothed things over.. Duran also did good in his 1997 rematch with Jorge Castro down in Panama... MR.BILL:deal
One of my favourite performances from pretty much my favourite fighter of all-time. Obviously Leonard was his best win, DeJesus II was probably the best example of him at his peak, and Moore is my personal favourite for how 'vintage Duran' it was, but this stands up to anything. I still think the late 70s Duran is one of the five or six greatest fighting machines ever caught on film (personally I could see him ranked as high as 2nd in that regard). Incredible fighter.
I am still not 100% over my anger in regards to Duran getting butt-reamed in 1996 by the three blind mice who scored in favor of Camacho on PPV. That decision was so politically incorrect.. They only gave Camacho the decision because SRL was hinting a return if Camacho were to win... All praise be to economics... Have mercy... MR.BILL Note: Camacho at age 39 deserved the decision over the 50 year old Duran later in 2001. But, even though Duran was ancient and slowed, he still was cagey and strong against Camacho out in Colorado... WORD!
I think that Carlos Palamino is one of the most grosslyunderated boxers on this site. Particularly when you consider that he appears live and in technicolour for all to see. Prime for prime, there is no reason why he couldnt give Sugar Ray Leonard more than a run for his money, Both lost to Duran fairly, but Ray was closer to his prime. You dont fight the fighters Carlos did, without getting KOd, unless you are a pretty special fighter, imo. Does anyone know anything about his comeback? Even that looks pretty impressive, considering the length of time out of the sport. I presume it was probably Foreman inspired.
I see ex-champs like "Joe Naps, John H. Stracey, Pipino Cuevas and Carlos Palomino" being in a leauge just UNDER the league that "Duran, Leonard, Benitez & Hearns" competed in... MR.BILL
LightsOut, Great Post Start,,, I remember hearing this fight on radio, in New York. I thought Carlos would beat him up. Round after round the radio announcer kept saying, "I give this round to Duran' Truly a great performance over a very good fighter.
I wish someone would put the first Duran/Camacho fight on youtube. Thats one fight I never saw, but have always heard Duran looked really good.
