Sort of what Xplosive, griffo, Robert, Mike Gould said. Old Bones was a great fighter, a lanky, hard-hitting shrewd counterpuncher and I could see him stinging Duran with left hook counters off of the occasional wild overhand right from Roberto and maybe shortening some punches at mid to close range to put up a similar level of resistance as De Jesus or maybe Buchanan to lesser degree: Kenny was tougher despite Brown being a more concussive puncher. It's just hard to see a man who really struggled with the smart rough-housing and pressure of Charnley and Rosi - very, very good though they both were - ultimately having much joy against a next-level free-wheeling tyrant like Duran when he's instinctively rolling under incoming fire while lashing away with fluid attacks to the head and body from those intuitively placed angles that are so hard to both defend against and counter.
Brown was 34 against Charnley when he was taken the distance,and33 against Rosi.Pretty old for a lightweight.
I find it hard to pin down his prime though mate because he was an Indian summer type who grew with experience and aged superbly, honing his style when his physicality was arguably declining. Not too long prior he'd beaten Dupas and Kenny Lane who are among his best wins, though I suppose how much better the version who beat Smith, Zulueta etc was than the 33 year old version is debatable at least. Or if he was a slightly better fighter in his run to the title maybe, I haven't seen footage from then tbh, though he had the odd loss then too. Great to see you back by the way!
all of the lightweights mentioned COULD beat Duran, but probably wouldn't. He was the most well rounded, and had stamina and toughness that you couldn't overcome. But if anyone could beat Duran, it would definitely be Whitaker, Armstrong, Arguello, Brown, and Ortiz. Think about it, DeJesus beat prime Duran, and he wasn't as good as those guys.
The bolded is such an apt description and is one of the reasons Duran is such a monster. Even the most technically proficient (and speedy for that matter particularly at the lower weights) are going to be caught on a reasonably regular basis.
I never get why people get banned on here tbh by barring obvious instances. Yeah @mcvey, have a read of the Golovkin-Chang thread if you're in need of a laugh and wondering if anything's changed.
