we all know how it ended, durans famous low blow after the bell. but going in to the final couple of rounds who was up on points?? and by how many rounds?? im lookin for a personal opinion as i doubt anyone will know the official scorecards!! i watched this fight such a long time ago i cant remember much. ken gave him a lot to think about tho! very good fight!
That was Duran's fist big fight and Buchannan was supposed to walk right through him. The beginning was close then Duran started landing those rights and body shots...he had Buchannan hurt and was breaking him down. Out of frustration or desperation Buchannan was punching after the bell and Duran gave him one South. He could have continued but didn't. Duran was ahead on points regardless!!! They were showing it on the Classic Fights on the ESPN channel.
It's a good fight, though slightly one-sided. Duran was handling him pretty well. Buchnan is a forgotten fighter to most now, which is too bad. He was a very solid fighter in his own right.
Duran was up on the cards, one of the things some hold against roberto is that he didnt rematch buchannan.
Ken was meant to walk through Duran??? Was he really odds on to win?? On a side note im sure Duran openly claimed Buchanan was one of the hardest fights he had n had a lot of respect for him!
low blow or not duran would have won that fight anyway. he was beating buchanan from pillar to post:-(
I met Ken Buchanan a few years ago and asked him if he thought he could beat Duran with the experience of the first fight to go on.He said he thought he could have won the first fight with better refereeing and no infamous "low blow" I was a bit shocked to read later he felt happy losing to such a great fighter:huh Someone in the boxing community told me there was another version of events from Ken so not sure what he really thought. He was a fabulous fighter though. With that level of ability nowadays he would be an absolute star.Wonderfully fluid.
Buchanan's my favourite british fighter and terribly forgotten as someone said, a real testament to the greatness of duran from that win, especially at lightweight. Having said that, ken does look like paul o'grady.
