Roberto Duran vs Mayweather

I think ranking Buchanan above Oscar and Shane at lightweight is very very optimistic - they were both beastly freaks at low weights. I don't know that he would have handled Genaro Hernandez. Oscar carved through tough guys like paez with ease. Oscar pre-Tito is no joke. Then he became a part time fighter.

 

In any case, duran's win over Buchanan is probably one of his most controversial. Shades of gainer-Norwood, but not that bad.

 

If you honestly believe De Jesus is two levels below SSM you probably should stop posting on this subject because you CLEARLY have no idea what you're talking about. But be that as it may, I would pick both of these fighters, in their primes, to beat Mayweather, never mind De Jesus.

 

Oscar and mosley beat duran . Haha oscar had a hard time beating chavez when he was 90 years old . Be gone go study boxing. I didnt say de jesus was better than mosley i said it would hav been a great fight plus a shane at lw vs floyd would be a pik em for me. Duran would destroy shane.

Buchanan competed in one of the toughest lightweight era's. A lot of the guy's he fought and beat back then would have held titles in future era's. Buchanan beat the great lightweight Ismael Laguna x2. Winning the world title from master boxer Ismael Laguna is a better victory than anything Oscar or Shane did at lightweight. I wont include Buchanans victory over Ortiz as he was shot. Buchanan beat some top, top guys at lightweight and gave a young, near prime Duran serious work. I dont think its as you said 'very, very optimistic' to think Buchanan would've beat Oscar and Shane if you look into Buchanans record and see the quality on there.
Buchanan wasn't just a brilliant boxer, he was also seriously tough and game. Oscar and Shane don't move as good as Buchanan and they would be dealing with a guy with an outstanding jab. Buchanan has the tools here to box his way to victory and I think it goes without question that Ken would be able to take their power as he took plenty from Duran and proved throughout his career that he had a head and body made of concrete. You talk about Oscar and Shane being beastly freaks at lower weights but Buchanan fought the ultimate beastly freak at lightweight in a Brutal contest. The version of Duran that beat Buchanan also beats Oscar and Shane and probably in an easier fashion as they are more flat footed than Buchanan was. The main reason Buchanan survived for so long vs Duran was his exellent footwork/movement and his teak toughness. Buchanan boxed brilliant at times but Duran imposed his will on him like he would do to Oscar, Shane, Floyd and any other post war great lightweights.

the bottom line it's stupidity to point out 2 fights out of 45 where floyd was struggling little bit,everybody have go trough adversity at somepoin in their careers.

and you point out floyd was in his prime against castillo in LW,why you don't point out that against de la hoya that floyd was past his prime also and was way out of his prime weight


and yes it's little bit hard to fight with one arm like in the first fight against castillo,and still floyd managed to win.

duran vs floyd at LW is to me 50/50 matchup i can't favor either fighter,both have styles to cause problems to each others :deal

it' really sad how much floyd gets hate here.

floyd would win against chaves and naples and relatively wide UD,also i would favor floyd against SRL.just look the fight against floyd dad's where he struggled mighty and floyd is 10x the fighter comparing to his dad.chaves and naples are both little bit overrated.
hearns would probably be too big for floyd and would win. but duran is totally 50/50 matchup and floyd is definetly skillwise up there, not some second tier fighter.
the only difference because people rate duran so way above floyd is his resume,but go away if you think SKILLWISE floyd would not cause problems to duran.

this is not competition who got better resume,this is who is better fighter and who posesses better skillset and floyd definetly have the skill set to compete against everybody.

and lastly do you even think duran would struggle against floyd?or are you thinking duran would run trough floyd?who posesses at his PRIME one of the fastest hand,excellent footwork,great stamina and excellent defence,if you think so then we don't need talk about this anymore.

and even floyd resume is very good names like hernandez,castillo,corrales,de la hoya,hatton,marquez,mosley,cotto,alvarez are screaming elite level fighter not some second tier club fighter.

and yes i'm not hating duran only pointing that there are and there will be fighters as good as duran,i rate duran very high but i keep my eyes open and don't stay in the closet masturbating to the old timers and thinking no matter what they are heads and shoulders above modern fighters,according to these people floyd and pac will be the GOATS of 2000's no matter someone does like next 50-100years he got no chance against floyd or pac because they are from the past.and using this logic if floyd and pac would be killed against old greats,these future greats probably would not even qualify to be a sparring partner to duran.maybe waterboy if they really impress you?

It boils down to whether or not Floyd could hurt Duran and get his respect. If not he'd be on the defensive for the whole fight because Duran wouldn't let him do anything else, unless Mayweather wanted to turn it into a slugfeat and no way is he winning that type of fight.

If Mayweather is forced on his heels and Duran is coming forward, then it's only a matter of time before Duran feints and lands something that seriously hurts Floyd. De Jesus actually fought Duran that's why it was such an entertaining trilogy, but Floyd's doesn't really like getting hit so I don't really see how he wins, not at 135 anyway.

And one thing to consider is that most boxing experts put Duran at worst 3rd in the history of the lightweight division, and most have him number 1.

This isn't just cause they like his style, it's because they realize just how good he was. Now some guy who's been watching boxing for 4-5 years all of a sudden decides that hey those guys in the past were all ****, now Pac and Mayweather are the best of all time. Just one problem, me and may others on this site have actually watched all three of them fight, because we're old enough to have seen a prime Duran, a prime Pac, and prime SSM a prime ODH, and a prime Mayweather, we know what we saw. And honestly if you want to know who would win between Pac and Duran just watch their fights, it's pretty easy to see that Duran's simply on another level. I can't really think of anything Pac does better than Duran with the possible exception of him maybe having more speed. Floyd could cause Duran problems, but like I said, he'd have to get his respect or Duran would simply be all over him. Personally I think a prime SSM or ODH would give Duran more problems than Floyd would, but I know that's debatable..

Floyd's got a lot of attributes that can help him against Duran. He's got underrated toughness, good handspeed and great timing, and a fantastic defence. He'd have his moments for sure, he'll win some rounds clearly and he might frustrate Duran at points. I can certainly understand why some people think he would beat Mano de Piedra, based on the fact that he was extended by movers like Viruet, Mamby et al.

But he's going up against someone with a solid jab, deft footwork, better than expected D, great combinations, a terrific body attack . In the first SRL fight, he displayed the type of ring generalship that allowed him to appear to dominate an opponent even when the opponent was enjoying some success of his own.

Duran from Montreal combines those first four attributes better than anyone that Floyd has faced; but the final attribute is the one that I think is most important. Floyd will have his moments, but when Duran tracks him down, I think he'd make certain that the judges would focus on what he's doing in the ring...and that, more than anything else, is the reason why he takes a close decision on the cards.

At 154, incidentally, I pick Mayweather to outpoint Duran. But that's another thread for another time.

 

First off Duran was not undefeated at 135 he fought a good not great fighter in dejesus who is c-level, I mean comparing Castillo to dejesus is a joke.

But you seem not to "acknowledge" that Leonard again "acknowledged" that Duran would usually gain a bunch of weight, eating like a pig and partying after fights. Which gave Leonard the idea to call for the re-match immediately, giving Duran an offer he couldn't refuse, knowing he wanted to take advantage of the situation (in which Leonard admits). A loss for Duran where you claim he was "flustered by speed etc etc" where Leonard learned how to fight the "right" fight because in the fight prior he couldn't beat the smaller Duran inside, so he learned how to beat him by outboxing the fat, unprepared Duran on the outside.
