I believe Duran's aggression, slipperiness and workrate would get him the decision. But if there's one guy who I'd give the best chance to beat Duran... it's Pete
I like Duran by dec, Whitaker would be a difficult fight for him, Whitaker is a top 5 lightweight, but he would find unlike a Ramirez or Chavez Duran is very hard to hit cleanly, and his counters would make him defensive minded. In a 15rd fight I like Duran to win a unanimous dec, In a 12rd fight, a majority dec. Duran's aggressiveness and power, with that uncanny defensive ability of his would keep Whitaker in survival mode. After the fight Duran would Call Whitaker a ***** and a coward and curse his mother and his wife lol.
First off; just because who you think a winner is doesn't make it fact. And Duran ko d a lot of guys never ko d. Thats what ko artists do which is what Duran was at lightweight. I saw Duran in person twice at lightweight, Viruet 2 and Bizarro. If you Duran was slow you are blind. Even at welter he beat LEONARD to the punch all night. Duran would do things whit never saw. He would drape himself on on whi all night. **** the Duran who ran over Buchanon alone runs whit out of the ring. Must be nice to be soooo self-righteous as you and know YOU are right. Its opinions man. Least I saw a lot of these guys live and in training etc to form an opinion. DURAN DESTROYS WHIT AT LIGHTWEIGHT OR WELTERWEIGHT. KO!!!!!!! Suck on that Meta
Sweet Pete by UD. Duran is my favorite fighter of all time, but Pernell is all wrong for him. Edwin Viruet and other movers troubled him and southpaws also threw off his game.
I agree with a lot of what you say here. Problem is, you're being disingenuous with Pea, and that is my main issue. He's better than you're making out, much better
This is about it - Whitaker too is awesome. Maybe one could try and put forward a scenario where he stops Whitaker later on but it's unlikely. Whitaker had a top chin, was super elusive and had excellent stamina. He's a top 5 lightweight i reckon. I'd lean to Duran by decision in this one but Whitaker would be tough.
I don’t understand how someone can come to the conclusion that Duran is a league above Whitaker ....he is not
I ask you friend, have you seen all Durans fights defences of 135 title, and all through the 1st Leon fight in full fight form? Basically have you seen his complete career not highlights the decade of the 70s of which he was fighter of the decade? A great boxing decade by the way. Have you? Just wondering. You are a good poster. Just wondering.
I go with Duran who was a more ferocious puncher than Chavez or Delahoya. Duran would work the body and head and get a stoppage late in the fight unless sweet pee fought very defensivly then it would be a ugly UD win by Duran. Duran and Sweet Pea would have had more size equality than a lot of Durans opponents while he moved up in weight. Duran at 135lb and 5'7 was really a lightweight to welterweight frame
Amen brother! Knockout artosts score knockouts over other great fighters. Roberto Duran was a classic example.
And Roberto would resort to roughhouse tactics. Whitaker did not fight that way at all & I think his cutie pie style just won't win the rounds against this guy. One of the worst matchups for Sweetpea the way I see it. Whitaker wants a guy on the outside playing the feint game. Box.A headhunter and Sweetpea reads every punch coming. Roberto will not comply whatsoever with that & would really be roughing up Whitaker on the inside. I sure don't see Pernell having the strength to tie him up inside either. The biggest gaps between the 2 is inside game/punching power/chin. What does Pernell do on the inside with this guy? One thing that Whitaker always did was to spread those legs far apart. Too far. His mobility will be inadequate against a Duran & I think bodywork really takes away those Whitaker legs. He'll be hard pressed to make it to the finish line & would suffer more wear and tear against Duran than he would in 20 fights.
I agree Z. And in highspeed exchanges Duran was the best I ever saw. Nobody pea fought feinted like Duran. He drove leo and palomino nuts. Yes Duran is the highest level of fighter w everything. Robinson. Armstrong Greb Benny Leonard Gans Monzon type. Whitaker is not.
Agreed. And Sweetpea simply had to have that feint game on the outside working to his advantage & man, then he was in his comfy zone. And a handful. So a Carlos Ortiz is a better suited opponent. But I sure do not see the lightweight Duran playing that game. He's capable to do it but he'd fight a different style because he would not play into Whitaker's strengths. I'm guessing that's the way we both see it. Can you imagine Roberto on the inside with this guy? He'd walk him to the ropes and it'd be all the ref could do to break them up.
What sthpaw thrrew off his game? He fought one of the greatest ever evenly and had NO trouble landing. He beat Viruet and Bizarro easily. I WAS THERE! Do you really think peabrain would be as tough a fight as leo 1? And that was at welter. We're talking ltweight. Get real man. Yes Roberto Duran IS on another level than pern whit. Sheeeeit man 2 or 3 levels. The top! I made it. TOP OF THE HEAP MA!!!!!!!!!-
