I thought Duran deserved a draw....... Christ, Duran was like 9 yrs longer in the tooth than the peaked Sims was in '86 and naturally the smaller man, regardless of the 160 lb. weight limit.... Sims never really lived up to his promises after he edged Duran by a **** hair in Vegas...... I recall Sims choking against Sumbu Kalambay in a WBA title fight.... Sims also choked in a WBO title fight too...... MR.BILL
Sims had talent, but was over-hyped cuz of his relation to his far superior older bro Hagler....... Sims was at his best in 1986 when he KO'd a listless John Collins and edged Duran in Vegas........ MR.BILL
It's crazy how Duran would just stand there and trade with him a fully fledged MW. I remember I had this pretty close first time I watched it, cheers for posting! Have you got round 10 at all?
Duran was rocked / staggered early on by Juan C. Giminez in late 1987 at 160 pounds as well...... Duran really had a solid beard throughout his career..... Christ, even at age 147 in 1998, Duran ate what Willy Joppy had to dish out for nearly 3 rds........ Naturally Duran was shot-to-hell by then........ :| MR.BILL
Yeah, and we can't forget when he was almost spun right around vs Barkley and still stayed on his feet.
People forget just how diminished Duran was in the eyes of the American media at this time. The journos would never miss an opportunity to pour scorn on Duran. The fact that he fought through all of this and ended up beating Barkley is an amazing feat. It also proves how skill and psychology are vastly underrated by the majority of the sport's followers who see everything in terms of speed and power.
Simms didn't choke in his other title fights at all. Good fighter on his day.I'd pick him over the vast majority of middleweights that have come along since the early '90s crop.
