I'm not sure how tough durable guys had success in trying to crowd SRR (Carmen, Gene, Jake), but Duran couldn't find success in doing so? He was as good inside as they were, and better at most everything else. He wouldn't have a weight/size advantage that maybe Jake or even Gene benefitted from, but Carmen wasn't all that big, and he had success bossing SRR. Duran would win at least one fight imo.

No go for Roberto .. RR was too big a puncher .. maybe a good fight against the early 1940's ww RR but not by the later 40's ..

I'm saying LaMotta probably deserved the decision in the 3rd fight. Just some accounts I read of it. Yes he had Ray down I that one too. I understand the weight pull Jake had and I touched on it in my first post.

John I think Leonard was better inside than Robinson perhaps better defensively. Sugar Ray would find Duran a tough target moving in. Duran could beat him once in a series. Robinson was consistent but he was also capable of an off night. Servo found him, Bell found him and Levine found him. Duran would find him.
I don't dispute Robinson would win the series but Duran could take one.

Duran might take one but my money would be kept well away from it personally. I think SRR had more tools to fend off Duran's aggression. He had huge power at 147 and blazingly fast hands. Sorry mate but i can't back Duran myself.

Robinson was the greatest. Both on their A game he's gonna win. Ray would have to have an off night. Which could happen the more times you fight.

This is about styles, power and control which SRR is the man in this fight SRR could fight this fight in any style and win but it is SRR footwork that would trouble Duran all night long not to mention the power he carried in comparison his ko of Fullmer and stoppage of LaMotta is all I needed to know

It's possible for sure mate. The question is how good was his off night at 147? Also could Duran have an "on" night when Ray had his lesser one?

SRR in 1943 was 40-0 when MW LaMotta (160 lbs) put a loss on WW Robinson (145 lbs) in the second fight 3 weeks apart. A fight with California Jackie Wilson was sandwiched in between.

(1943-02-19 : Sugar Ray Robinson 142½ lbs beat California Jackie Wilson 142¼ lbs by MD in round 10 of 10.)

SRR's (54-1) next glitch was against Jose Basora (54-9-4)

1945-05-14 : Sugar Ray Robinson 149½ lbs drew with Jose Basora

by PTS in round 10 of 10

    • There was a sellout crowd of 14,653 at Convention Hall.
    • Robinson was a 7-1 favorite.
    • Referee Charlie Daggert scored the fight even, 4-4-2. Judge Harry Lasky gave the fight to Basora 5-4-1, and judge Frank Knaresborough had it for Robinson 6-4. The Associated Press called the fight even, 5-5.
    • According to the AP, Robinson won four of the first five rounds but wilted as Basora rallied to take rounds six through nine. Basora was ahead on the AP scored going into the tenth, but Robinson gained the draw by making Basora retreat in the last round with a series of lefts and rights. [1]
Later in 1949 SRR defends his WW title against Kid Gavilan and SRR is 95-1-2.
Robinson goes to 90-1-2 in 1949 when he has a draw with Harry Grimm in 1949.
1950-08-09 : Sugar Ray Robinson 147 lbs beat Charley Fusari 145¼ lbs by PTS in round 15 of 15 in his Last defense of WW title.

I guess when you fight so often, you can't be on perfect form every night, even if you are in your prime.

Duran was a great 135lber, SRR was a great Welter & Middleweight so I would favor SRR here, however Duran still very capable at Welter & in condition this would be a battle of craft and skill

Most thought that when he faced a prime Leonard in Montreal. The 2nd best welter in history, yet he did win. In a 6 fight series to think Duran wouldn't have a ON night and R.Robinson an OFF night somewhere doing the series and win one fight is an underestimation of Duran in my opinion. Esp since R.R loss to Lamotta, and had a tough a go of it in each fight. Duran was light yrs better in the skills dept than Lamotta, though he was a smaller man.

Tell that to the modern boys who weren't fighting every 3 frigging weeks! IMHO if the modern boys were fighting 12 times a year, their record would be 'scattered' with losses.
