Here's something to shut you up. Served up by long term members. https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/greatest-wins-of-alexis-arguello.624148/
Arguello was probably a little bit pre-peak overall and raw as a punch picker and master of offensive timing in the Marcel fight compared to the more settled and calculated incarnation at super feather, but still had the visible ability of a great fighter. If anything he was a bit quicker of hand and lighter on his feet in that fight, which were probably two of the better required attributes against a mover and punch slipper of the near unequalled talent that Marcel was. Marcel was an incredible fighter even by the time of the Duran fight imo, probably comparable to Duran himself even if they were both green. It was a very close fight imo and a bad stoppage, Duran only really having the edge because of how heavy and damaging a puncher he was below welter, able to force Marcel backwards against his terms during the exchanges and simultaneous transitions more than the other way around. I'd argue that the Marcel who battered Shibata and Gomez not long after was as skilled and talented as Leonard in a p4p sense, though obviously far less greater in terms of achievement. One of the four or five best fighters I've seen captured on film. it's a hugely underrated win for Duran like Iorkeim said. One of very best. It's a case of Duran being so far best his best vs Barkley and Moore and they being naturally bigger that muddies the waters, and how dominant he looked against Buchanan, DeJesus and Palomino. It intermingled everything somewhat.
Your cheerleaders squad? I must say "these" long term members must be senile for their arguments have worse logic than fifteen year olds. For someone who was laughing at the Davey moore opinion without knowing j**ks**t about the fight, you sure do talk a lotta crap.
Marcel threw little to no punches in the 10th round. I have no idea why as he didn't look particularly gassed.
Spot on. De Jesus was an excellent fighter and had some great wins in the division but was obviously over shadowed by one of the all-time great. He was regarded as top 10 pfp in 1977, so very highly rated back then. The Buchanan win I rate slightly higher, because Ken at the time was regarded as a man destined for all-time greatness and the heir apparent to Napoles' 'Pound-for-Pound' title by many- and some of his performances were compared with the best pure boxing of all-time in the Ring. He was pencilled in for a very long reign, until Duran came along. Both excellent lightweights who would have had much more success in many other eras.
Draw-up a Leonard top 10 and let's see who you have between 6-10...there's a half-decent chance Dave 'Boy' Green might even be in there.
Yeah, liked Tin_Ribs' post saying Marcel was as skilled and talented as Leonard and Arguello was just a little pre-peak, while trying to ridicule me for saying he was the 2nd best name on Duran's resume. Paranoid John pfft... I will take the concession that you are trying to preserve some legitimacy as a poster after your clowning today. In the meantime, you can keep deluding yourself about alts and "Duran-friendly narratives" (lol).
Agreed. Dejesus' reflexes looked to be as good as Duran's and although not quite as talented as his long time sparring partner, Benitez, he wasn't too far off. His left hook counters are among the best I have seen. Fast and can throw them from pretty much any position. I think he was more skilled at countering than even Benitez. Both of his hands were dangerous. 3 of his 5 losses are to ATGs (Duran, Cervantes), 1 to an elite fighter (probably HOF fighter in Antonio Gomez) and 1 to a tough skilled contender in Mamby which was his last fight. And as you said, only one fighter beat him at lightweight which was his best weight class.
Good list, but I'd put Barkley at nr. 1 or 2. Castro should probably also be higher due to the age and size difference. But pretty much those 10 wins.
Jorge was only 15 months removed from the WBA championship. I always like pointing this out. Good list.
