    Round 5

Vasquez pushes up his right jab and dances around on the outside. Briones tries to wedge his way in against Vasquez down low. Briones flicks a few jabs up close. Vasquez is using lots of leaning and hot feet to leave Briones twisted and tangled, punching air or massaging Vasquez's back. High-rising left hands and right hooks by Vasquez on the back foot, drawing Briones onto them by just slowly drifting back toward the ropes in an appealing lulling motion. Briones comes charging in and slams away with hooks and rights, but Vasquez is in there rolling and bouncing around like a pinball between the touch-pads.

Some really nasty exchanges in that last round. Good action throughout, really. Hope it continues in the second half.

    Round 6

Briones ratchets up the pressure, using his jab to hold Vasquez against the ropes while crashing in with right hands to the body. Vasquez tries to slide back and flick up southpaw jabs, but is walked back toward the ropes. Vasquez tries his right hooks but can't hold Briones out. The Mexican pours it on up close, landing left rips to the body and rights to the head even as Vasquez rolls with them. Vasquez tries to tie up. Briones nails him with a 1-2. Another. Vasquez dances back and circles rapidly to his right, on his bike.

    10-9 Briones

    59-55 Vasquez

    :good

What's your thought on this South American custom of having odd-numbered rounds in bouts? Championships contested over eleven, etc?

Barring a knockdown or deduction, it does on the surface drastically reduce the odds of a draw. :think

    Round 7

Briones is wailing away, taking short creaky-hinge right hook counters gladly to lay both hands on Vasquez. The local hero can't catch a break, trying by turns unsuccessfully to cover up, tie up, move backward (barred by ropes), move to the side (cut off and swarmed by Briones), and counter (no effect). Briones is just hammering away with both hands almost nonstop as Vasquez tries to figure out how to cope.

    10-9 Briones

    68-65 Vasquez

    Round 8

Hard jabs by Briones. Vasquez drifts to the ropes, and pokes out his right. Briones is throwing persistently, but perhaps tiring. Double right jab to the temple by Vasquez, whose movement may have left him a bit weary himself. Right to the body by Briones. Another one slamming into Vasquez's head as the Spider leans back and drops his hands. Lazy left to the body by Vasquez, and another up top missing. Briones headhunts with his left coming forward, and gets a Vasquez left stuffed into his belly. Face too. Briones lands a hard left jab.

    Round 9

Vasquez is moving in and jabbing with serpentine motions to avoid Briones' shots now. Slapping hook sliding forward by Vasquez. Right hook to the body. Clapping left over the top. Briones walks him to the ropes but misses several consecutive punches, hooks and rights all whiffing. Vasquez lands a HUGE RIGHT UPPERCUT on the inside, and snaps Briones' head back. Vasuqez is landing combos off his southpaw jab now, and navigating carefully through Briones' slower shots. Falling in with jabs and left hands, Vasquez is making himself very difficult to touch as in the early rounds.

    10-9 Vasquez

    87-84

Interestingly, if Briones turns it back around and sweeps the championship rounds (such as they are here) and scores a knockdown - it will wind up a draw on my card. :think

Nothing in that scenario - another momentum shift, nor a KD - seems all that far fetched...

Part of the reason why I've always advocated for the 15 round WT distane is because of the reduced chances for drawn fights (not that draws are necessarily a bad thing). So I don't have an issue with the distance as such. In fact, I wouldn't object to seeing WT fights scheduled for 13.

    Round 10

Good exchange to get cracking! Big left hands by Vasquez!! Uppercuts by Briones! Snapping each other's heads back with jabs!! Southpaw 1-2 by Vasquez, repeated over and over and dribbling Briones' head back against the top of his spine like a basketball. Briones somehow just keeps forging through it and trying to hit him back. Right hook backing out by Vasquez. Flush right jab to the face. Briones puts everything into a right hand but falls short. He hammers over the top with it, again and again. Vasquez keeps leaning into the ropes, using their give to come back with jabs and lefts with a bit of extra oomph on them, and gets back to slipping and ducking as Briones sends his fists on a parallel wild goose chase.

    10-9 Vasquez

    97-93 Vasquez

    Round 11

Glove touch. Cool. Briones comes forward, flexing his knees and stretching his jab to measure out. Flush left hand by Vasquez, snaps Briones' head back. Briones keeps coming, pushing out with his jab to blaze a trail for himself. Left uppercut to the body by Vasquez from outside. Briones keeps coming, and slaps out with a wide left hook and a big sloppy right. Vasquez ducks in, grabs him, and spins him before disengaging. Counter by Vasquez. Clinch.

    107-102 Vasquez

Signal lost at the end. :huh

I guess we don't get to find out who won until it shows up on Boxrec, probably tomorrow morning. :!:

(this card is probably too obscure to be reported on at any of the major boxing news sits...and besides, whichever one of them might deign to cover it would probably have been relying on this same feed...)

106-103 (Only difference was the fact that I scored the fifth for Briones)

You'd think that Vasquez would likely be given the nod, based on the work he did, and the fact that he's the hometown fighter. Stranger things have happened, though...
