I only saw him a couple of times. He's not spoke about much .. for a former world champion and Olympic medalist. Made a few defences of his world title, beat some good fighters like Wharton, gave Calzaghe a close fight, got robbed against Ottke etc yet he's almost forgotten about...
Very good. As you said he was robbed against Ottke, and achieved all he did despite having big problems outside of the ring with booze/drugs. He would be on a similar level to the DeGale's and Groves of today. A SMW champ for sure. He should have retired after the Magee fight really.
He was very good at his best, I thought he was unlucky against Calzaghe but was beaten comfortably by Jeff Lacy. He lost to Froch a couple of fights after Lacy but by then he was pretty much done. The Ottke fight was one of the most disturbing fights I've ever seen, anybody who hasn't seen that fight needs to find it and watch it, you will be open mouthed, angry and probably start rating Ian John Lewis very highly. I think his best win was beating Nardiello in Italy to become WBC world champion, I thought Henry Wharton was a solid win too. Wharton was another fighter who I believe would have picked up a version if he was around today, he finished his career 27-3-1.. Wharton was never stopped and lost to Benn, Eubank and Reid in world title fights. The closest Wharton got to a world title was a MD loss to Reid. Wharton won British, Commonwealth and European Super Middleweight titles.
world class, since he arguably beat world class cowzag and def fringe world class ottke, plus other world classers
The Ottke decision was a total disgrace and I'm sure that in the post-fight interview Reid said something along the lines of that if his two nans and his auntie had been the judges he might have scraped a draw in Germany.
He was a tough man that's for sure Think he would take a groves or degale But those above would lose to ward, froch
he was tough enough to beat fringe worlder ottke and go equal footing with world level class cowazaghe but i think someone of frochs calibre or ward, bona fide elites, are a bridge to far too far.
Just off point got a great pic with Robin Reid when I was a kid with him and his bronze medal next to his car, which had his name down the side of it, have to dig that one out and post it on.
i said he was world class, thats nice thing to say. in the same sentence i had him better than ottke, even nicer.
