I just finished watching this again. Reid had a huge heart and a very good chin. Lacy was really trying to take Reid's head off with every shot. Really good performance by a prime Jeff Lacy why people **** over Calzaghe's win over Jeff i don't know before the fight he was good not a great fighter but a good one. Anyway that ref was as bad as the Ottke one round 5 was a joke Jeff put Reid down on the break got warned by the ref then he started counting reid atsch To make matters worse when he gets up he takes a point off him for head butting atsch. Then 2 rounds later Reid gets another point off for holding he was doing a bit of holding but not a lot. Might go on a bit of a Lacy rampage this week
Well Reid had never tasted the canvas before that fight - so it was some achievement by Jeff to make Reid look like a yo-yo in the fight. Good win and a good performance.
Reid would have whooped his ass on an average day 5 years earlier, thats the truth of the matter. I say average because Robin could blow tepid or hot. Reid was a top fighter when he was focused on boxing and not being a glamour boy.
Not at all. He was incredibly upset and prided himself on his steel chin (never been knocked down)plus it was hardly the best way to bow out of the sport for a guy like Reid who tried so hard.
From memory, the fight was closely fought up until the controversy. That seemed to take the wind out of Reid's sails after that, and Lacy just monstered him. A 2007/2008 rematch would have been an interesting match up, although the care factor wouldn't be close to rivaling that of their first fight.
Stick to Rugby. He got battered from start to finish. The closest it came to been competitive was the national anthems, Reid was well past his best but even in his prime Lacy would have had too much for him.
Lacy was winning the rounds, but he wasn't blowing him away in the early exchanges like he was after the controversy. From memory the fight just seemed to change not long afterwards, though perhaps everything just took it's toll on Reid by then anyway. A prime Reid would have done him.
No chance. Watch it again. It was a pretty horrible mis match. Lacy was on fire.... had he fought like that against Calzaghe he might have won.
Lacy was greta in that performance. But by the same token, Reid was utterly terrible. I spoke to Rob Reid at ringside and he said that his then-promoter shafted him out of a chunk of his purse towards 'training fees' then when he arrived in the states he was in a hotel in the middle of knowwhere and the nearest boxing gym was about 70 miles away. He just did pads by the pool while people sunbathed. No sparring or anything.
Well, you may be right about the Reid fight. It's been a while since I've seen the fight and probably wont see it again so I wont bother debating it, even though I still gave every round to Lacy. Regarding Lacy/Calzaghe, Joe could have fought Lacy on ice skates while wearing a straight jacket and he'd still have UD'd Lacy. Joe just had him worked out badly, and Lacy was unable to do a damn thing about it and was unable to pull out a plan B which resulted in him losing every 30 second period of that fight.
Close? There was no part of that fight that was close other than Lacy's fists on Reids head. It was a complete mismatch. Lacy clubbed him into submmision.
Lacy looks great against guys he can bully. Anyone who possess's even a modicum of a jab and can box has Lacy's number. Jeff just isnt a smart fighter.
You could be right but Lacy was bullied out of been competitive at a very early stage, had he had the crown chanting his name things might have been a little more competitive. No way that Calzaghe is can have close fights with Kessler, Reid, Hopkins, Jones but completely dominate an on form Lacy.
