Lacy will always look like a killer vs guys who cover up. You have to look at the quality of his opponents. Even Sheika gave him a VERY close tussle. Why? Because Sheika punches back. Anyone who punches back can beat Lacy. I love Lacy's attitude but he's horribly flawed as a fighter.
I've only seen the fight once so my memory is a bit hazy on this one but perhaps 'close' was a bad choice of words. From memory Lacy didn't seem to dominate him to the extent that he did in the later stages. If both you guys reckon it was the same than I'll take your word for it because it's not a fight that holds strong memory to me.
Used Brians Gym a lot a year before that Fight. Robin was very rarely there. Dont know what He was up to , but it wasnt Training. Very good Fighter Great Guy.
Lacy to me is a sort of super-middle version of Sam Peter. A great on top fighter who can look awesome against opponents who are awed, overwhelmed or simply a faded force, but when someone presents a bit of a problem then he'll struggle badly. Has hell of a heart though, I'll say that for him.
I think Reid was also intimidated a bit by Lacy because of the massive hype surounding him at the time people were making out he was a super middle tyson clone which turned out to be bollocks. I think if reid was on top form trained proply and not had any problems when he arrived it may have been a different story. Prime Reid with no fear wins I would say like.
JEFF LACY vs ROBIN REID (Rounds 4-6) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MC3ZmzG2v2M I'm surprised not more is made of Jorge's Alonso's abysmal performance. It was very reminiscent of the Ottke fight in the manner in which any infringement perpetrated by Rob was severely reprimanded, whilst Lacy's frequent **** shots/hitting after the bell (round 4) and when a break was called (round 5), was completely ignored. Unfortunately it's something of a recurring theme in Rob's career; he encountered more than his fair share of crooked/incompetent officials whom were seemingly intent on preventing him from reclaiming world titles.
The ref was really ****. I don't know what he was seeing in the 5th round. The judges all scored it different i think one had it 10 - 8, 10 - 7 and 10 - 6. The ref didn't do the usual Showtime interview after the stoppage but said Jeff knocked him down before he said break. Also thought Reid was very honest in the post fight interview about using the head.
I wholeheartedly agree with all of the above. As inconsistent as he was, in his prime i'd have taken Rob to win a comfortable UD over Lacy.
Not a bad comparison. Except Lacy has a better chin at the weight and has slightly better technique. Lacy can look great against the right opponent. But when matched against box punchers forget about it.
Feel sorry for Reid, ref was dodgy in that fight but he was never realy going to win that fight, well over the hill. Was a victim of the ref against ottke too.
