Sickening behaviour wasn't it! Every bit as bad as knowingly taking a banned substance. Ironically Ottke's standing as a fighter has suffered greatly because of this. He'd of been far better off losing the decision. People just see the low life crook he undoubtedly was and fail to see he was a pretty gifted boxer as well.
The only ever fight that sent me to sleep! Apart from the lack of finesse from both fighters the ref was awful.
I've defended Ottke the boxer on this forum on several occasion. It's absolutely correct that his reputation would be better -- not great, but better -- had he simply lost this bout. He was aging, after all. However, I can't defend Ottke the competitor after watching his actions in this fight. You have guys like Andy Lee getting pummeled and continuing to fight back, while Sven seemed offended any time Reid had the audacity to behave like anything other than a gracious guest.
This was a disgrace. I can't believe that no further action was taken or some investigation wasn't taken regarding the corruption in this fight. The Ref should have been sacked as a started and Ottke should have been made to defend in the UK in a rematch or be stripped of the title.
Reid warned again and again for hitting Ottke... atsch :-( :-( :-( :-( :-( :verysad :verysad :verysad :verysad :verysad :bart :bart :bart :bart :bart
Ottke and the limp wristed, crooked, waste of oxygen who I have trouble calling a referee were way out of line that night. Ottke played up to him all night and the ref was in his pocket. Calzaghe would have beaten Ottke to a pulp.
Observe that Reid was a very good fighter, very close to Bernard Hopkins on his day, just less consistant.
I still say Reid would've KO'd Ottke that night if he didn't have the ref on his back. The fix was in and they would've disqualified Reid if it looked as if Ottke was losing. What makes me laugh the most was the Reid was at least 3 or 4 years out of his prime in this fight, and he still did a number on Ottke. A prime Reid, like the one who fought Calzaghe, would've taken him out in under 6 rounds with a competent ref. Surely this wins the "most blatantly corrupt fight of the modern era" award?
Does anyone actually believe that Ottke was a more worthy champion that Kessler? I mean I in actual fact do believe that he won the vast majority of his fights...and I respect that fact that his style, though not exactly crowd pleasing was effective...he did live up to his Das Phantom nickname thats for sure. I just can't see how people really hold it against Calzaghe for not fighting this guy. He had a well known aversion to fighting outside Germany and you can see why...I watched that live and I actually found myself laughing at how obviously crooked it was... Ottke lost a whole load of respect from me that night. He knew what was going on.
People hold it against Calzaghe for not fighting this chump yet refuse to give him credit for the better fighters that Calzaghe has fought and beaten? :blood
A part of me wishes Reid would've just said " **** this, if I'm gonna get jobbed I'm gonna give this **** something to remember me by " and knocked that punk out.... and then probably get DQed for it.
Saw thjis fight a month or so ago, and imo Reid gave it to him enough in the first 7 or 8 rounds to win the fight. I'd have this the 3rd biggest robbery I've seen. RJJ seoul Olympics is an easy first, followed by Rabah getting robbed against Urango. Reid looked to be a good fighter back then.
