Had this avatar for about 2 months, i just don't post that often. With ******s like this starting threads like these, can you really blame me?

You can´t really compare fighters between eras like that. When Robinson fought, fighters were generally worse. A lot of them were not fully professional, having day jobs. Training and technique was generally not as advanced, ditto for diets and supplements. If Robinson had been born later and was boxing now, he would certainly not have a 200 fight career but he would also benefit from today's advances in training.

It´s also far fetched to compare greatness just based on who´d win in a fight prime for prime. I´m sure Lewis, Holyfield, Tyson, Bowe, both Klitschkos and probably even a prime Golota, Mercer, Tua and Ibeabuchi would all blow out tiny and crude Rocky Marciano - doesn´t mean they are all greater.

Greatness is legacy - not just being a good fighter with a good record. That is why Ali is the greatest - cause he became bigger than the sport and a historical figure. Likewise Robinson´s legacy far surpasses that of Mayweather.

 

I disagree in ways with most of this, even though you're clearly not an idiot like the threadstarter. We've gone over all the points you've made in detail about training, techniques(both have been similar to how they are in modern times since about the 40's in general). Diets and supplements make minor differences. Training, exercising, and dedication are what is key, not who has a few more grams of protein in their diet. Those who consider people who fought with little gloves for 15 rounds with much more leniant refs lesser athletes, or at least lesser in terms of stamina and durability, are crazy.

Yes but he then came back in '71 to fight Nixon, and '72 to fight jimmy richards. You are right, he did retire at age 45, however he did come back and fight these two sanctioned fights at age 51, and 52. Never the less, Fighting and winning most competetive fights, up until the age of 45 is a huge achievement. Especially with the amount of fights throughout his carreer, albeit many of those were quick wins with so many stoppages for the great man in the early rounds.
