Yeah, he really did well. Twelve years in the biz (and that is just the promotional side, after three decades in boxing with the New Jersey commission) and just months into that he set a then all-time PPV record which still currently stands at #3. He maintained a steady niche among the US' top promoters (although never higher than 4th or 5th biggest) and has consistently been involved with big events. Not a bad job building up his business, and if he feels the price is right the sale of Gary Shaw Productions to Roc can't be called anything but a smart move. (especially if he gets to keep a hands-on role)
Urban street culture now getting more and more involved in the promotional side of boxing. What could possibly go wrong????
Good for all parties involved, I suppose. I wonder if this means anything for the discussed Wladimir/Jennings showdown on HBO. Shaw also has Daniel Geale still, I believe.
Urban street culture? Jay-Z is worth about 520 million and his wife is worth something similiar. He hasnt been anywhere near "The streets" in about 20 years. He also isnt going to be the one running the business.
Shaw would sell his soul if the price is right. He is the low man on the totem pole and he cashed in to noobs who over paid for his garbage.
I mean.......there aren't that many players in boxing that are big promoters at the moment. We have TR and GPB......then we have DiBella, Goossen and Shaw. There are 1000 small time promoters putting on local events and promotional companies abroad but Shaw isn't the low man on the totem pole when you look at the landscape. He has just cashed in on some capital and gave up having to toil with the harsh side of running a business. He can focus on promoting and finding talent. Not a bad look in my opinion.
You forgot Main Events. This is a good move for Roc Nation. They are doing things the right way. Not trying to just "represent" fighters and then pretend they are not a promoter. They are going the path of being a real deal promotional boxing company. More power to them! :good
First thing Jay Z needs to do ASAP is sign Shaw's son Jared to his label. The kid has it all. He's the complete package. The chiseled good looks of a matinee idol. The hunky well-toned lithe physique of an athlete. And he's also super talented and has plenty of street cred to boot as well. [YT]P_Bg6l_u-ZY[/YT]
