I could name you a hundred great action packed fights, but we're always talking about professional fighters, and even the ones that get hit a lot compared to evasive runners still use a lot of defense. Fighters with little to no defense get knocked out in a round or two. Brandon Rios and Mark Alvarado might not be the slickest, or the most adept at head movement and slipping punches, but when they fought they were still world class fighters. Gotta' give respect where it's due. I don't even think of Arturo Gatti and Micky Ward as having no defense, as hittable as they were.

As with all things, defense and skill is a matter of degree, rather than a black or white issue. Gatti v Ward 1 Gatti landed 60% and Ward landed 55%. Corrales v Castillo 1 Corrales landed 54% to Castillo's 56%. Morales v Barrera 1 we see Morales connects with 37% of what he throws to Barrera's 48%. Rios v Alvarado 1 saw Rios land 30% to Alvarado's 22%. Does that mean Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado were utilizing better defense than Barrera and Morales?

What's your threshold for no defense? No defense to me means you don't even bother with a guard. You just drop your hands and let your opponent take free shots like Vargas did against Trinidad. Respect where it's due, Arturo Gatti was a two weight champion. He used his feet and his guard. For real rock 'em sock 'em no talent brutal action you want to see the last two rounds of "Caveman" Lee vs John Lo Cicero. You need to watch some journeymen or some amateur bouts. Because world class guys only look hittable when they are in there with other world class guys. A normal person isn't going to lay a hand on Arturo Gatti or Brandon Rios.

Anyway, my point is that you can have a good action fight even with good defense, and the defensive skills of action fighters is often underrated.
