People who follow the UFC closely - is this an upset? I know Luke was thought well of, but to have the undefeated champion (the guy that beat Silva, twice, along with Machida, Belfort, Muñoz, Sakara, Maia...) bloodied and helpless on the ground?
It's not that big of an upset to those in the know. Rockhold is a very good fighter and he's improved greatly over his last couple fights. It was surprising to see however to see how big he was compared to Weidman. Weidman himself is a very big MW and he looked dwarfed in that cage.
Romero is going to beat Rockhold imo. This is the sort of thing that happens when a division is talent stacked, the belt moves around. During Silva's time there was one A level guy and a bunch of B and C level fighters. Now there are several A level guys who can hand each other loses on any given night.
why did weidman throw that spinning wheel kick lol, he seemed so out of his element. that kick led to the battering he received, I thought he was losing the fight before, but that was just stupid.
i remember luke joking around pre fight about how chris couldnt kick high, maybe that got into his head a little. anyways im glad luke won, he's the far more exciting fighter, weidman is what I hate about UFC, all the grappling bores me. the gunner nelson fight was a complete snoozefest for me.
Plus Luke has been getting the short end of the stick when it comes to being underrated and title shots. He is the man that beat the man at UFC MW.
I've always said that chris weidman was a one time wonder champ. He was the guy that came along the perfect time when Anderson Silva was losing his edge and won the title on circumstances. Kinda like Conor Mcgregor.
i don't think so, most were well aware that Rockhold was a tough challenge for Chris. Luke has been great for a few years now. maybe a upset but not a huge upset imo.
Not really. Rockhold has improved leaps and bounds since losing to Belfort. Weidman has always been overrated.
Agreed. Rockhold might have too much finesse for Romero on the feet, though. Machida/Jacare Vitor/Weidman II Those are the fights I want to see now.
UFC should really prohibit striking someone when they are on the ground, it's too much of an advantage and turns MMA from a legitimate sport into a street brawl.
