"Boxing is a lost art. These days it isn't the same game that I knew at all. I'll tell you what I mean. [Rocky] Marciano there [sparring], he never could have laid a glove on Jack Johnson. I mean that seriously. They don't have time to learn the fine points anymore. They don't know how to feint, or to sidestep to open an opponent up. They only know how to swing and hook, swing and hook."

    - Harry Wills, former heavyweight contender, 1955

    Thoughts?

In my opinion, Johnson vs Rocky would've been an UGLY matchup. Aggressive, relentless, high volume pressure fighter who throws wild bombs every minute of every round.

    VS

Cagey, defensive spoiler who fights at a slower pace on the backfoot jabbing, clinching, wrestling, pushing, blocking, parrying, and frustrating opponents with annoying tactics.

    Who wins and why?

Do you think Wills had a point...? Would Johnson's negative, slower, defense-oriented style be the perfect foil for Rocky's suffocating offense...???

“At Stillmans, there were countless "gym fighters," (highly touted amateurs) who looked like a million dollars sparring...made Marciano look like a heavy bag, but wilted in real bouts.” - John Garfield

He has many posts on how bad Marciano looked sparring.

Would have been interesting by the rules and equipment of Jack’s day as he might very well neutralize Rocky grabbing him around the wrists and manipulating him, but danged if I can figure out how he’d wear him down as Marciano was a workout addict and probably comes on strong late to win over 20 if that’s what it’s set for.

Johnson would often grab his opponent's gloves even from long range, I think we'd see a similar situation here

Marciano did more than just swing and hook.

I firmly believe that Rocky has this. Not only is Rocky relentless, but dude has the stamina, chin and punching power to do so. He'll overwhelm him and knock him out via technical or straight up lights out. That's not to say he won't have trouble with Johnson's superior ring IQ and boxing tactics.

I would go with Johnson--Jack has the size and strength advantage along with a great jab and uppercut. I think he would be able to effectively neutralize Rocky in the clinches and also open up cuts which would take a toll as the fight went on. You always have to worry about Marciano's ability to land a haymaker but I think Johnson's overall ring IQ would not give the Rock an opening to connect on one of his power shots. UD for Johnson on points.

Tough bout to decipher. If it had been a young, fit Jeffries in there with Johnson, we may have received our answer.

This is becoming a big of a habit with me lately but I don’t know who to pick.

I would add to my post above that with Rocky there’s always the chance of him coming out the wrong end on a fight stopped for cuts (maybe the split nose thing with Ezz colors my thinking here, but I think an Ali would put him through a blender of facial damage and a Johnson might do the same).

Otherwise, I think it’s Rocky over 20 rugged (and ugly as sin) rounds.

Swarmer usually have an advantage over boxers. Swarmers with power usually crush them.
