No one has provided anything yet.

I admit I would be skeptical even if Graziano could be accurately quoted as saying something like this, because he would probably have been joking.

It also is the plot in the movie For Me and My Gal in 1942. Gene Kelly deliberately breaks his hand to avoid military service.

"LaMotta policed fighters like Lloyd Marshall, Bert Lytell, Holman Williams, Jose Basora, and prime SSR."

Your definition of policeman is different than the one I understand. I understand policeman as a boxing term for a fighter who eliminates rising contenders for the champion (or possibly another contender).

Of this group, LaMotta could be viewed as a policeman possibly only regarding Basora.

He never beat Marshall, so he enhanced him as a fighter.

He did have one win over SSR, but immediately lost a return and if he eliminated Ray as a contender it certainly wasn't noticed at that time or any time since.

Williams was beaten earlier by Lytell and Cerdan, so it is hard to credit Jake with removing him. He was already removed by Cerdan, however mediocre you believe Cerdan was.

Jake beat a green Lytell long before Lytell became a contender. He certainly didn't eliminate Lytell as a contender as Lytell was in fact rated above Jake in 1947 and 1948 when Graziano was fighting for the title.

I like Rocky as a colorful character and a good puncher but feel anyone that rates him as a near great is completely over rating him. At best he was a poor mans Arturo Gatti. LaMotta would take him apart and either win a lopsided decision or stop him along the way. After two rounds it’s a mismatch.

Been watching both guys today. To be honest I'm not really impressed with either. Rocky never took to training or learning how to properly box he says so in his book. Rocky fought in the ring like he did in the street he wanted to measure you with the left and nail you with the right. For what it's worth Rocky always said he used to kick Jake's ass when both were in reform school. That was before either was any kind of a proper fighter though.
Jake looks better on film. Underrated skills very tough just doesn't now nor ever did overly impress me. A somewhat similar style guy in Apostoli beats him IMO.
I would pick Jake to take him.

There is film of Jake in mid 40s out there..one available is his dejohn fight. I’ve read this version of Lamotta looks much better than the 50s version. Younger, Faster reflexes, body more toned, better upper body movement....maybe this version might impress you a little more. Some historians believe Jake was already past his prime by the time he won his title....that the 43-46 Lamotta was the best version...faster sharper...poor lifestyle habits and ballooning his weight in between fights caused Jake to show up to a lot of fights out of shape or in poor condition...but he put it together for one final performance vs cerdan where he showed up looking lean and ripped like back in his prime...one New York reporter saw Lamotta take his robe off and immediately he changed his pick to Lamotta. After the cerdan fight, Lamotta was toast..just coasted stopped training hard.

You do describe Jake very well and I agree with everything you said

Jake was in his prime in the 40's not the 50's as you wrote. I like Jake and feel he was talented and tough as hell although Raging Bull does overstate his overall skill set and power ..

Watching the Robinson fights against both men there is no question of how heavy Graziano's punch was and he is strong but LaMotta was stronger with respect to SRR, bigger and tougher. Rocky might buzz him once or twice but LaMotta mauls him and maybe stops him. There is no power comparison be at chin and toughness Jake has in spades....he would wear out the Rock with pressure.

This would have been a dream fight two street guys from NY with the Rocks heavy handed power vs LaMottas chin....Rocky was a dangerous tough guy but LaMotta was a legit tough guy as well and alot meaner

That's a great picture. Rocky actually has that look on his face he has in interviews as an older guy when he gets worked up and talks about trying to knock a guy out LOL Rocky seemed like a real nice guy but with a real dangerous fuse that he carried over long into retirement. Neither man was known for letting anyone take any liberties on them from what I've read. Rocks bio was literally one fight after another it never ended with him. In all the boxing bio's and autobio's I have and I have alot. Nobody had a shorter fuse and got in more fights than Rocky as a young man. Again then when you see him older on all these talk shows he seems like a really kool guy. Quite a change for the better.
Jake ...well we all know his rep

Ray had said that he was glad that Graziano's right didn't land a little lower on the chin because he wouldn't have gotten up. Robinson said when you fight Rocky you "see sharp or you B flat.". Check it out
