I think you're seriously underrating Carter here.He had fine skills and was a quick handed top-notch offensive fighter with all the punches.Could display very good defensive skills while stalking as wel...see the Salim fight for examplel. You would need a hell of a lot more than just a good jaw to stand a chance against the guy that was fighting Benton, Tiger, Giardello etc... He didn't have the sturdiest, quickest legs or most versatile footwork. That was his biggest flaw i'd say
I see Rocky by K.O. I seen someone mentioned Rock's whiskers well his chin was alot more proven and tougher than carter's in my opinion,I just seen a couple of weeks back a show called "fight night classics" where carter was fighting a substitute fighter I can't remember who I think it was " holly mims" but anyways mims was not known as a puncher at all and rocked carter with a right hand and had him reeling and "Dick tiger" knocked him down 3 times, neither one of these guys hit nearly as hard as Rocky did,the P4P greatest ever "Robinson" was quoted as saying out of all the punchers he had fought Rocky hit him the hardest.Carter had good punching power but I don't think he could keep a prime Rocky from swarming him and getting the K.O.
Which part of the quoted post were you responding to there? I stand by Hagler destroying him, but can see how the second statement could come across as giving a very low opinion of Carter. I should qualify the statement, here's an adjusted version: "Anyone world-class with a good chin (or even a solid defense and stamina) matches up favorably head-to-head against Rubin." Would you say that's fair? Of course he could hit like a meteor, and he wasn't some unskilled brawler by any means. He just wasn't exactly a world-class boxer and won more on the strength of his power than on any refined technique. He also gets put into an undue number of fantasy match-ups, where only greats with chin issues would be be in trouble against him. That's where the above statement came into play - it was assumed we were talking about world-class operators (as he did lose to the majority of those he actually did step in with).
The latter statement i disagree with.He was a world class boxer-puncher imo, very clearly sbviously one more in the seek and destroy zarate/louis/valdez mold, rather than a cutie or mobile lateral moving, jabbing fighter, but very skilled nonetheless. I don't have any interest in all the out of the ring mythos around the guy, but i feel confident having seen plenty of him, that he was a straight up very good fighter, albeit one with a brief prime. Someone that anyone world class with a chin matches up favourably with, is not going to be a particularly good fighter imo.Maybe a Charlie Magri glass jawed banger type at best. I agree he shouldn't be pitted against all-time greats though.even putting ability aside, he simply didn't accomplish enough to merit getting the benefit of the doubt those kind of discussions.
