Ive actually seen them too. I dont think you need to sit in a gym with them to know who hit harder and I take a grain of salt with the opinions of someone who admits Rocky was his "rabbi".
As 'favoured' as first hand accounts may seem, there's an endless pleasure of reading the accounts from JG. Having mixed with the great names, little wonder the names are held in such esteem by him.... and countless others. JG's words will continue as a fine reference for years to come, as they should with deserved continuinity. He's a credit to the forum for sharing his experiences to all. A very rare link to such men indeed.
If you read through my posts, K, you'll see I NEVER claimed Rocky hit harder -- simply said he hit-a-ton and flattened light hvys sparring. You must be an ancient, like me, to 've seen Rocky and SRR box live.
klompton i think JG is great with his experiances. What he says he has experianced and he never seems to overrate fighters. Its great to have little insights from JG. Hes a top guy
John, Since you have been around the block a few times and met these guys. What was the real story behind the Graziano/Green III fight? Did Green throw the fight? Rocky couldn't beat him in their first 2 fights and Green supposedly was a tough SOB. The word is that Green took a dive for Rocky to get his shot at Zale a couple of fights later? What's your take?
Knew Rocky and Green well, ff. This is lame...and I'm sorry. Lemme put it this way: There's Rocky's truth, Harold's truth, and the REAL truth. Gotta leave there.
The LaMotta/Graziano hypothetical is still a fascinating one to me, though I'm sure it's been done to death. One with a great chin, one with a great punch, can Rocky ko Jake?
I think Tony Zale gave him a run for his money in the hard hitting stakes, his fights with Rocky were wars
Interesting pattern here by klompton: "Graziano's overrated." "Miske's overrated." "Whitaker's overrated." Apparantly, the human institution we have in John Garfield is also 'overrated'. Beware of jinxing yourself klompton -it is said that the critic is the unsuccessful author devolved. The former builder reduced to throwing bricks.
Very funny JG. Its no epitaph mate. Just a sincere few words of thanks, as Im sure 99% of the 'Classics' would like to say. There plenty of years left before worrying about an epitaph anyway. :good
For all his short comings, it's probable that Rocky was one of the hardest punchers to have fought for a man of his size. The man punched well above his weight. The punches he threw were demolition like - exaggerated bends and heavy lunges - the kinda’ punches that dug holes. He must have been one of the most uncomfortable men to face for he did not partake in any of the 'dance', any of the 'give in take'; he marched into your personal space and smothered the finer points of pugilism with all out aggression. Definitely worth a ticket was Rocky.
