I have to disagree with you, GD. I was ringside at Eastern Parkway Arena for the Patterson-Maxim fight. Joey double and triple-jabbed Floyd -- all on the money -- every round. Won the fight with just the jab. Dull dull dull, granted, but he set the pace behind an all but impenetrable high guard and tattooed him, even landing straight rights, albeit without power. Floyd's showy combinations were largely impotent. The judges got it right. And I thought the world of Floyd. Watched him at the Gramercy gym over time and was certain he was the sport's next big star, but fair is fair.
I agree; it takes a lot of charm to make such an awful format work. I remember his hosting of the second Charles fight ("A right hand on the top of the head" my big hairy mivocks) and the Cockell fight (forgotten celebrity woman makes bunch of saucy comments while Marciano smiles awkwardly) being amazing examples of the entertainer transcending the entertainment. It was also a good insight into what goes on in the mind of a champion- "Charlie's just given me ten instructions in the corner, and I can't remember one of them!"
It's funny, how a "******ed guy" could have fooled so many guys into thinking that they could have beaten him, only to painfully realize the error of their ways.
