That's unfortunate news. Does anyone know how his life shaped up after his very public intervention way back in 2009/2010?
Very sad to hear. 1983 was my first year of serious interest in boxing, and Rocky was among the fighters regularly televised at that time. His bouts with Boza and Mayweather are among my first memories of televised boxing.
I posted about this yesterday and today. Apparently he's suffered multiple strokes and isn't expected to last much longer. Still waiting on more detail, however. Lockridge was a great fighter at his best and he belongs in the HOF before most guys they put on the ballot. He deserved wins over Pedroza and Gomez, and fought real close with Chavez. Lineal champ at 130, too.
Lockridge is not in the Hall of Fame? And I found out Meldrick Taylor is not either. Is Nigel Benn in the hall? He should be also, but I have a feeling he is not.
I actually met Lockridge in '83 in Vegas. I was watching Arguello spar at Caesar's when Rocky walked in to observe and I engaged him in conversation. I thought to myself, 'what a nice kid.' He was fighting on the undercard against Boza Edwards. I didn't mention to him that I thought Boza was going to win (how wrong I was), but I was duly impressed with him as a good guy. Of course, we all know where things went wrong, but that is decisions we make along the way, which we are all accountable for. I look at his record today and shake my head. He made more money in a fight or two that many will never see in a lifetime. But again, decisions we make. Hope he recovers.
One of my personal favorites . If he gets the nod in those fights against Pedroza ,Gomez and Chavez. Were talking about a top 50 atg
I remember reading features about him in various 1980s boxing magazines like KO and World Boxing. He was close childhood friends with Johnny Bumphus and both became part of Lou Duva’s Main Events stable which was kind of like what Golden Boy organisation is like today. Both become world champions but unfortunately both also had drug problems towards and after their careers ended. I hope he pulls through ok.
yea, I remember in maybe the ring, not sure, headline was "Rocky Lockridge can't stop the music" and mentioned he was a drummer.
