never come across that. thanks. wonder what differences we would see in the rating of marciano if he came back and beat johanson, which is very possible. maybe to some it would just mean he ducked liston or patterson but it would be a significant achievement.
Marcianos way of thinking THEN was simply out dated..Ali brought Boxing into the main stream....I do agree with his assessment on ali not looking that good in his fights, but lets remember when he sparred Ali for the computer Match up he quickly changed his mind on alis abilitites in the ring. H2H I would take 1970's ali easily over him style wise. the ali Marciano is talking about was very beatable and even he sees why without much footage of a modern world! Of note both won the computer matchup...the u.s sised with Marciano and the british viewers sided with Ali...which I actually think is coerrect, had Marciano been a bit quicker in foot I believe he would be favorite but he wasn't.
I never saw or heard any indication that Marciano changed his opinion of Ali after the computer fight. The last thing he said about Ali, before he died was "I could have licked him". Marciano said that the only two fighters he wouldn't have wanted to get in the ring with were a prime Louis and Liston.
He said Ali was the fastest guy he ever fought/sparred and much better than expected. I think against a 60's ali that was the one he fought/matched up with he stood a good chance but on the same note Marciano himself didn't look good either in most fights against top guys,he struggled himself. Marciano out of shape is a hard sell when evaluating Ali too.
Good choices! Those were two guys who knew how to draw an offensive fighter, onto a carefully prepared killing field.
" I never knew a guy that big could hit that fast " Marciano's own words to his own hangers on after one of the filmed sequences of the " computer fight." I think you will find it was when Ali knocked Marciano's wig off. Marciano apparently got the hump about it, and went for Ali with purpose, so Ali opened up on him just to let him know he could.
Depends on how he beat them. His legacy would go up for sure. I find Rocky very honest and knowledgeable when he talks boxing.
yeah, i haven't seen one in a while but there's a few fights up that have him commentating(recorded later iirc) and he came across well.
There are so many stories about what happened during the computer fight it's hard to know what happened. I heard that Ali kept knocking Rock's wig off and the last time Ali did it Rocky immediately hit Ali in the body and knocked him down and Ali demanded a pay raise before he got back in there. But who knows to many different stories to know for sure.
