fair enough, i was a quarter way through a small essay when i realised the maths said it just as well, and i'm too tired, and a little drunk, to write it all, basically i was saying the logic of your post was a bit flawed. I do think you are being a little harsh on povetkin, but you aren't saying anything ridiculous, i can't remember his name right now, but the last guy he fought came to win, and wasn't totally hopeless.

Well, Povetkin also hasn't good jab, because of short arms (71'', not 75'' as is officially listed now).

He's skilled, yes. But Chambers outboxed him clearly in the 1st 8 rounds till he got tired and lost.

Byrd was shot at 37, as he got dominated and KO'd easily by LHW jorneyman in his very next fight. Even 2+ years before Povetkin fight, Byrd already looked like a shot fighter against Davvaryl Williamson.

Donald lost every round but he was 40 and inactive. No surprise here.

That was a good fight for that level but Carlos Takam was another 34 year old ten year "prospect" himself. he wasn't anybody really. yet competative Carlos could not miss povetkin and at times hurt him. Who had Takam fought? Ancient Botha, ancient Grant and Thompson? He already had lost to a 10 fight novice (who himself did not amount to anything) so there was not much to draw from to give povetkin THAT much of a fight. Trouble is there are far too many two fights a year heavyweight contenders short of competative fights to draw from after ten years or so as "prospects" yet they can give povetkin tough fights. He wins these fights but what does it mean when the Huck fight showed he struggled with a natural 1950s sized heavyweight?

All povetkin has got is his size over Marciano and it was the size that encumbered him against Marco Huck. Come to think of it a 20lb lighter Povetkin could really give Marciano a scare!!!

Being as fair as I can to Pivetkin I think without the artificial weight that has encumbered the entire heavyweight division the last 20 years he has the makings of a special fighter. The pedigree is there. He has power, heart and can punch in combination but without the competition and weighed down with the extra 20lb or so that the change in diet and training all heavyweights have added to themselves it is not possible to achieve the same edge that post 1980s heavyweights had.

In Rockys day Povetkin could have made it as a great fighter because he would have fought more often and met better fighters. He would have trained like they did and been a lot lighter too.

Today he is a different fighter. As good as he can be by the standard of our times but away from a level he might achieve under another era.

Every source I can find says 75". What is your source for this?

Boxers don't just "get tired". They wilt under pressure and pace. Sasha beat a very good, very hot undefeated fighter ratcheting up the pressure and keeping the pace hot into the later rounds. An excellent victory.

That was made by Sauerland when they composed Sasha's tale of the tape with 31'' waist :huh and 75" reach. They didn't even measure him, they just wrote numbers. 31'' waist is smaller than Holyfield's in his 20's :nut

    Check this photo.

The difference is quite obvious for anyone. Takam has 76" reach (only 1 inch over Povetkin with crearly broader shoulders, so their arms should have the same length). Stats are often incorrect.

If Sasha had 75" reach, he would've had much better jab. It was said on Russian TV in his early pro days, maybe I'm wrong and it's 72 not 71, but clearly not 75.

None of this really convinces me. Pictures can be very deceiving regarding these things. And I don't see a lot of difference here. Sasha could have his shoulders tensed up and Takam relaxedÂ… and still hardly any difference. And also having a 75" reach does not translate into a jab better or worse. Reach is nice if you can enforce it but jabs are about technique and timing. Tyson had a nice jab with a 71" reach. He used it against many guys with longer reaches.

I met Sasha 3 years ago. He was a quite a bit bigger than I expected. He was a legit large heavy and did not seem doughy or truncated. He seemed pretty damn athletic. But that was just a couple minutes at an airport, so who knows.

Every tale of the tape says 75" so I am going to stick with that. His style is not jab based. He works inside angles and punch variety and packs excellent power in his right. He's not what we have come to know as the typical upright Euro heavy.

I'm not trying to sell you anything so I'm not biased about this information. It was said by russian commentators that Sasha has short arms and it was named not in inches but in sm (if I remember it was 182 sm or close to that, it was clearly shorter than his height - 188 sm).

He's pro for 10 years now. Up till 2011 I believe there was no any stats on his reach and his arms always looked short for me, so that commentators seemed to be right.

The official stats were published before Chagaev fight and are listed as 75'' reach, 31 waist (trust me, I'm a competitive athlete and know how 31'' waist looks. Sasha has no less than 37-38 waist in reality).

Also another stats (a fact), check Povetkin vs Chapman 2005 fight. Sasha was really skinny there. He was listed on German TV 196,5 Lbs and he looked like that. It's his most skinny version of all amateur and pro career.

However, Sauerland for some reasons changed the stats and in Boxrec it is shown now as 217 or so (Don't know the reason).

I was really Povetkin's fan in those days so I studied about him more than others.

Now I just dislike his agressive country - Putin's Russia, but have nothing against Sasha personally.

Povetkin is legitimately the best of the rest at the moment, but you still have to question whether he is in the class where it would be easy to favour him over Marciano.

To beat Marciano, you probably had to have a hell of a lot of something, as opposed to a bit of everything.

Well that's true. Hope you're not from Russia:roll:
Politics has influence on sports, yes. That's for another forum though.

As for jab, you must be right, Tyson had good jab despite short reach.

I didn't mean to be derogatory or short.

It's a scary situation. I feel bad for those affected... which if the US keeps meddling will be a lot more people.

    :good

For Sasha promoter Riabinsky it's a hard time now.

He had scheduled fights in Russia but the war affected Russian economics and his business, too.

Lebedev and Povetkin were going to fight in March, then it was rescheduled to May, and now Riabinsky says it will be in Summer (maybe).

He actually lost many millions as a result of falling economics, and his boxers just have to wait.

Most likely scenario will be that Sasha will get co-promoter and fight in Germany or GB, don't know if it will be soon

Huck rocked him badly in their fight, It was not the best Povetkin but he was breathing heavy after 4 rounds. I do not see A.P. taking Marciano's shots and pace and pressure for 10 rds....Marciano by KO 10

And a couple sub 200 pounders had Rocky down. And a fat middleweight with a gland problem took everything Rocky could throw flush for 9 rounds.

Shall we pick the best of one fighter's performances and the worst of the others? Is this how we play the game?

I actually think this fight would be a ripper. Sasha likes to open guys up with his combos, working angles around and between the guard. Marciano provides a small target in his crouch which would make this challenging.

I think Marciano's one-punch power is very overrated when considered with modern heavies. But I think he can really rack up the damage through work rate and attrition.
