Rocky Marciano 1954 vs Muhamed Ali 1974.

I think this would be a very good match!

Ali at his best in the 1960's couldn't hold Chuvalo off. Yes, Ali won, but Chuvalo had his moments.

Enter Rocky Marciano, who hit harder than Chuvalo and had faster hands. Rocky's defense was a bit better, and he was quicker with his feet too.

Ali's rope a dope defense used in 1974-1975, would not work vs Rocky. Unlike Foreman, Rocky would not tire, and unlike Lyle who had a points lead over Ali on fair score cards, Rocky didn't have a suspect chin.

I like Rocky here via Split Decision. If we are talking the 1971 or 1967 Ali, I'd pick him. But this matchup is 1954 vs 1974.

The fact that you cannot spell the name of the most famous boxer of all time is the most revealing fact about you.

Waiting for the usual nonsense from some posters inc:

Ali would have to fight for 3 minutes every round etc.

Mcvey hit the nail on the head with the ethnic comment and surprisingly very few of the Marciano crowd had the common decency to pay their respects on here when Ali passed away.

Well & truly nailed their colours to the mast on that issue.

There are different ways to spell it. So what. Cassius Clay never legally changed his name to Muhammad Ali.

    Now how about a prediction?

I'm not a Rocky fanboy and remain objective on him. Which posters are you referring to that did not comment on Ali passing? It wasn't me.

Different ways to spell Muhammad? What are the other ways?

Joseph Louis Barrow never legally changed his name to
    Joe Louis.
Arnold Raymond Cream to Joe Walcott.
Joseph Paul Zukauskas to Jack Sharkey.
People don't seem to have any trouble spelling their names properly.:huh

No ,here's one of you comments on Ali, complete with spelling mistakes.

"He called Geroge Foreman, asking him to fight Norton because Ali said I can't beat him and they are going to take my title away from me. Foreman was bitter Ali never gave him a re-match, but after this call the two developed a good friendship.

Ali was great friends with actor Jack Nicholson. Jack admitted betting against Ali in several fights, including Liston, Frazier, and Foreman. Post boxing Jack often acted as Ali's personal escorted sports and media events.

Martin Luter King criticized Ali's separatist views in the 1960's.

Often viewed as something of a genius, Ali actually graduated 175th out of 175 people in his high school class.

Ali never threw his gold medal into the river. It's a fiction story, and one confirmed that never happened by his closest friends.

Prior to the Black Muslims telling him what to say about Vietnam, Ali actually tried to register in Texas to avoid the draft.

One of the reasons Ali took the third re-match with Frazier was to have *** with his mistress on the other side of the world. Ali's wife flew out to Manila and confronted him.

Ali's birth name was Cassius Marcellus Clay. This is well known, however did you know another man had this name before? He was Kentucky slave owner turned abolitionist"

    Very positive I must say!:lol::patsch

Ali, doing handstands, the gulf in sheer class is to big for Marciano to over come.

I'm now almost convinced that Chuvalo actually beat Ali.
Here's me thinking he only won a total of 3 or 4 rounds in both fights, I must have been hallucinating.

Apologies, it wasn't directed at you, just work out who are the biggest Marciano fans and draw your own conclusions.
You can add a certain Dempsey follower to that list as well, obviously not Mcvey.

In all honesty, people are selling Marciano a bit short here (no pun)... The truth is that Ali was 212 against Frazier in '74, slowed down, more flatfooted, taking more time off during the rounds, and was fought tough by a depleted Frazier who wouldn't have another major win his entire career (unless you call a used up Quarry major)... I give Marciano a 30% chance here to out hustle Ali and eek out a decision.
