Poor choice of words. Maybe should have just mentioned the AIi and Foreman fights but I’ll def rewatch Lyle Ali it’s been awhile. I remember him gassing late. But it’s been so long could be wrong.

I agree with you that Lyle had stamina problems, and this was definitely on display against Young. Just not sure, Marciano will be around to test it.

    He doesn't.

Literally none of his losses were due to stamina problems.

Foreman was a knockout loss in a back and forth slug fest.

He was not gassing against Ali whatsoever. He paced himself well and got caught by a shot he didn't see coming.

Young and Quarry outboxed him and made him look dumb. But in neither of those fights was Lyle gasping for air or gassing.

I think you and gazelle are perhaps confusing chin with stamina.

I’d pick Lyle to beat or give trouble to a lot of guys. But guys like Frazier and Marciano I think would be to much for him. They’d overwhelm him and have the chin to be able to eventually wear him down.
Bonavena was a much better win then Shavers. Lyle did ok for himself career wise. Not better then Marciano but he did good

Well rewatched the Ali fight. He def gassed 8 round on. The last round he did look like caught a second wind when he came out of his corner but was immediately hit with that 1/2 then stopped. I will watch that other fight later but I see what you were Initially talking about how he tried to pace himself but Ali did a good job of adjusting and making him fight his fight

Aside from old men and light heavyweights what was Rocky's best win?

I think that Layne is better win than Shavers.

Lyle was a late bloomer who had a solid punch and solid skills. He was very solid.

He certainly boxed in the 70s and was a contender for two.. maybe three years.

He troubles the Rock with his rather underwhelming reach of 76" for a 6'3" man but likely gets knocked out. As some so passionately argued, his whiskers were so shaky Ali turned the tide with his power...

Lyle was quite solid, but was the list of good fighters he might beat really that long?

I don’t think Lyle is more than 50-50 against Ray Mercer.

I would pick Trevor Berbick to beat Lyle. Or I certainly would not be surprised if Trev beat Ron.

As many as he could beat he could lose to. He was the 70s Rex Layne. Just stronger with worse stamina.

I'm not sure Layne was any better than Ron Stander. Rex looks horrible on film. There's no athlete there tho he fights as tho he holds some kind of trump card in power or skill, which he didn't. He was a plodding chin.

You may dislike how he looked but he had better career and beat better fighters than Shavers, who outside of his power was nothing special and is consistently overrated because of the stories of hin being the most feared puncher ever.
