I have said this multiple times here: I rank him No. 5 because of what he accomplished against the people who were across the ring from him, but I think 15 or 20 ATGs would clean his clock in H2H confrontations. I don't think those two statements are in conflict because I don't base my rankings on who would win H2H.
I have him between 5 - 7. I don't understand all this H2H stuff. You can only be the best of your time. It doesn't matter if e.g. prime Tyson or whoever would beat him. Boxing has evolved like other sports and metiers as well. Would you favour anyone against Tyson between 1900 - 1950? Between 1950 - 2000 there are way more fighters who could potentially beat him. Rocky was still pre WW2 generation (shorter men with shorter parents, other conditions, circumstances, nutrition...). All in all, kind of another universe. He was the best of his time and his best beaten opponents were more or less as good as Dempsey's, Louis' (not quantity wise), Patterson's or Liston's. He retired at the right time, is one of the old legends with some exciting ring battles + he is one of the best role models in heavyweight boxing (diligence, determination, will power, heart, toughness and humility). Still, I have the impression he is not very liked here (compared to other greats), but anyway. And last but not least H2H is just fantasy, all hollow words.
Marciano beating Liston is as realistic as Liston beating Bowe. Size matters until agendas get in the way. There were guy in that thread who picked Marciano over Liston in the past. lol
Yeah, and there are also guys that picked Louis over Primo Carnera and Usyk over Tyson Fury. (Not saying Marciano would beat Liston. Just saying size makes a difference, but the beauty of boxing is that ANYTHING can happen.)
