If you have him as nr. 1 you must pretend not to know what other fighters did. Louis dominated the division four times longer than Marciano did and made four times as many defences plus one. That's a huge difference. Only without this context can one possible say that Rocky's record is better because of zero losses.
Why did you bring up a lot of names I never mentioned? READ! DeJohn no 10 Summerlin no7 Folley no 2 Bethea no8 Harris no 7 Machen no 3 Valdes no 2 "His best opponents were 190ish pounders." You made a statement that was wrong, and got called on it. You data is WRONG!
Same with Ali. Won the title 3 times, made 19 defences. Yes, five losses, but three of those at an age when Rocky was already retired. The other two after spending his best years exiled. Cleaned out two top 10's ten years apart, bar Machen. This is context that also can't reasonably be taken into account if Rocky's record is to be seen as the best.
Heavyweight's before the 80s/90s were just smaller though. You would have to penalize a lot of the heavyweights from then.
Your response was to name a load of nobodies, nobodies I never mentioned, as somehow proof Liston never fought and beat 195/200+ pounders of quality,,instead naming guys I hadn't even mentioned ,in an effort to take us off track. By listing the names I did,and their ranking when Liston beat them, I proved you were talking BS. Have the good grace to know when you are beaten!
Some of the names you produced weren't example of best opponents imo. Regardless, it's a matter of opinion.I responded differently anyhow. My typewriter ,my choice. The data displayed how many losses Sonnys opponents had around the time he fought them. It's ur choice to ignore that data
I posted 7 top ten ranked opponents Liston beat who fell between the 195/ 200lbs+ criteria , apart from Patterson these were his best wins.ie I am right and you are wrong.Next time it might be the other way around, but not this time. You posted several of his worst opponents in an effort to prove your original statement. How many losses those men ,[most of whom I never mentioned,] had, is irrelevant to the discussion, irrespective on whose key board they were typed.Ergo,I am right and you are wrong.
I rank Marciano umber 4 all time based on what he accomplished as I would any other fighter. The fact is he got it done 49 out of 49 times. and 43 of them we can't argue about. The man was in insane condition and had brutal power and an iron chin, only being knocked down once against Walcott from a left hook that he never saw coming. A lot of people attack Rocky saying his competition wasn't great etc. A fighter can only fight who's in front of him, though his competition like Walcott, Louis and Charles had seen better days they were still solid fighters who had been world champions, unlike some who took easy fights just to hold on to the title longer. This is why for me he ranks ahead of Holmes, Lewis, Bowe, Holyfield, Foreman, Klitchko, Johnson etc.
Hi Buddy. You properly know this and have forgotten, but he was also down in round 2 against Moore, the ref Harry Kessler came in for some stick form Moore who felt the count was slow, and also wouldnt let him go straight at Marciano after he regained his feet. satay safe SS, chat soon. Mike.
Marciano was knocked down twice, once by 38 years old Walcott and once by 41 years old Moore. Great chin? How many big time hitters did he face? Marciano's opponents pre Layne ,were pretty dire. Twenty four of his opponents were under190lbs. Seventeen under 185lbs. Seven under 175lbs. His victims had a total of 233 stoppage losses on their records. Feed those men to several heavyweights and they would duplicate his unbeaten record ,imo.
Marciano got up and headed for the ropes, expecting a standing 8 count, forgetting that it was waived in title fights,Kessler also momentarily forgot it too.
Marciano beat Walcott and Charles twice, and also Joe Louis although a faded one. He was knocked down twice and got right up that's all we can ask. Noone ever put him down for more than a couple of seconds at best and in 47 or his 49 fights he never went down. If he didn't have a good chin that wouldn't have happened. Joe Louis would even at 37 would have put him on the canvas, he didn't. In the second Charles fight he basically got his nose almost ripped off, most would have quit, he didn't. I don't rank Marciano 1, I rank him 4 and in head to head contests he takes a few losses IMO, but what we know is he was tough as nails.
