This is something I wanted to touch on because I think it's a reasonable argument. Rocky Marciano in spite of being in the region of 185lbs hit with more power than Liston did who himself was a massive puncher. I'm also not talking p4p here either, I think that the Rock hit harder than Liston regardless of Liston's size advantage. Let's go through some of the notable power on display from Rocky Marciano
    Rocky's Punching Power

At 26:18 Rocky sends Joe Louis who has a 30lbs weight advantage over him to the other side of the ring, I think this is a testament to Louis' chin(which I feel is underrated) that he actually managed to get up from that punch

Knocked Rex Layne out cold and knocked out his teeth, This is also a notable feat as this is something bob Satterfield couldn't accomplish, And we know that Satterfield could hit as he knocked out Cleveland Williams in 3 rounds. This is important because Sonny Liston also fought Cleveland Williams and he also knocked him out in a similar amount of rounds the third.
Knocked Carmine Vingo into a coma effectively ending his career.
Knocked out Bill Wilson who was 229lbs and had a record of 41-11 at the time of their fight in 1 round, I know bringing this up isn't a good idea but it does show that the rock could knock out a fighter that weighed over 200lbs, Johnny Skhor is another name that comes to mind who also fits this over 200lbs weight.
In his 43 Knockout victory's 23 of these were unable to beat the count... That's over 50%, to put that into perspective George Foreman had 25 people who were unable to beat the count in 68 KO victories or about 36%, Sonny Liston had 11 in 39 KO's or about 28%, However Bob Satterfield is really Freakish in this department, In his 35 wins that were by Knockout 30 of them were unable to beat the count resulting in a ridiculous KO rate of 85% Like I said... Satterfield could hit.

Rocky Marciano in his Fight with Jersey Joe Walcott, Both Deformed his Face and Knocked him out cold. Another good display of Punching Power from Rocky.

Hmmm.....it is surprising that Rocky is competitive in this discussion despite
giving away so much weight to Sonny.
Although I would make Liston an overwhelming favourite to beat Marciano, when
it comes to raw punching power the two warriors are probably evenly matched.
Sonny knocked out seven of Wayne Bethea's teeth with one punch.
A middle-aged Sonny Liston broke Chuck Wepner's nose and cheekbone plus
cutting Wepner so badly that he needed seventy-two stitches.I think it's too close to call !

Marciano probably hit as hard as anyone under 200lbs,but I don't think he hit as hard as Liston.
    Some points.
Satterfield knocked out a young Williams who was a last minute sub.
Schkor had been ko'd by Walcott in 1 round in his previous fight,he was a journeyman
Marciano did not ko Wilson he stopped him on a badly cut eye,Wilson was also a journeyman.
    Vingo was a novice.
Walcott was 38 years old. There are literally hundreds of photos of fighters faces being pushed out of shape by the impact of blows, immediately after they are back to normal.
    Louis was 37 years old.
Name 3 ranked heavies Layne actually ko'd?

Marciano never faced a 200lbs plus heavyweight who was class ,and in his prime.
If Marciano could hit as hard as you think ,why couldn't he get Cockell out of there until the 9 th round ?
Lastarza before the 11th round ?
Lowry twice went the distance with Rocky, without once being floored.
Red Applegate went the distance without being floored.
    How many rounds do you think ;
Applegate,Lastarza, and Cockell would go with Liston?

He was a good little attrition puncher who never gave up. High motor despite no discernable athletic endowment. He didn't hit anywhere near the level of Sonny, who was the first of the modern super athletes to enter boxing. Apples and oranges.

Liston quit against the light hitting Cassius Clay in 1964 in Miami and took a dive against Ali up in Maine in May 1965. Marciano ruined guys...Roland LaStarza had ruptured blood vessels and bone damage in his arms from his fight with Rocky fight in 1953. He had surgery to repair the damage,...blood clots formed in his arms...He almost killed Carmine Vingo...Vingo was partially paralyzed...he never fought again. He sheared off Rex Layne's teeth at the nubs in their fight in 1951...Lee Savold went to the hospital because Rocky has smashed his teeth up into his gums...British champ Don Cockell became ill during the his fight with Marciano in 1955...he was responsible for 13 permanent retirements...He hurt you no matter where he hit you...he never stopped coming...oh...and one more thing...if they stepped into the ring...Marciano would give Sonny Liston a REASON to QUIT!

Sonny would have sliced and diced Marciano like provolone cheese.

Reasonable take but I personally disagree, would definitely say that Marciano has the superior feats of punching though, especially his more explosive 51-52 self.

For what it's worth, Ezzard Charles said that Marciano hit harder than Liston. Though that Liston was half baked.

How would Ezzard Charles know how hard Sonny Liston hit in a fight?

GRANTED, this was before their fight. He didn’t exactly grasp how strong George was but he watched what he did to Frazier. No one understands better than him how impressive what he did to Frazier was and saying Liston hit harder than the man who did that to his rival? I couldn’t IMAGINE a better compliment.
