I remember as a kid seeing Don Cockell interviewed about the fight with Rocky . Don said Rocky had short legs when he ducked all you could hit was his head & you could hit that with a 2x4 & not phase him. I didn't realize that till I was in there with him. The interviewer said If you had known that could you have maybe beaten him ?
Don laughed & said Not bloody likely he was too good for me

If fighters are judge by who they have beaten, then who, exactly, did Holmes beat to deserve this praise? HIs best win was an either-way against Norton, arguably Ali's fourth best, maybe fifth.

And if you are abasing it on subjective opinion, then are you really so sure to declare that agaisnt a guy who manifestly struggled against Weaver, Williams, and Snipes? I mean the close fights against Norton and Witherspoon are forgivable, but now those guys.

And there are the fights taht he openly ducked and bragged about.

    Overrated in my book.

You only hate Rocky because he’s white…Jack Johnson as number 5? Rocky and Dempsey would’ve killed Johnson as would have everyone else you listed, noticed you left Jeffries off your list…

Rocky is an ATG but too much is made of his undefeated record.

In defense of Rocky you can only beat the man in front of you. And did he really retire to avoid Liston? I read he wasn't even on the horizon when Rocky retired.

Yeah and who says Rocky only beat old men?

Charles was 32 when he first fought him
    LaStarza was 26
    Layne was 23

And Joe Louis was only 75 or 76!

Cockell was only 26! These ranked contenders were young, I'm telling ya.

Now word on " kid " Harry Mattews though I hear he was 29, not exactly a kid. : )

Liston off the top of my head had about three fights of so. I highly doubt Marciano had even heard of him by that time.

Rocky beat every human being placed in front of him as a professional, and that deserves props. I will refer to my Frazier comment of the other day that even though he's an ATG, he's often placed on too high a pedestal here because of this place's default preference for warriors and swarmers. I will cite that preference; I cannot use the word "overrated" where he's concerned. And I think it's possible, and by no means a diss, to say someone is an ATG, "but ..."

Marciano is a legend, ATG, top ten heavyweight imo. Look it is not Marciano's fault that the young guns of his era could not find their way past the old masters like Walcott, Charles or Moore, otherwise 60 years from now we be talking about how great the Marciano Baker title fight was.
