I believe Jack Dempsey was 1-2-2 against Willie Meehan, in 4 rounders. Meehan was tricky, especially in 4 rounders, and was excellent (for whatever reasons) at doing just enough of the right things to win the favor of a referee from that time. I would say, under the exact same circumstances, and fighting in Dempsey's era, Rocky Marciano would probably not do any better than Jack did.
I agree, If Rocky's at the same stage of his career as Jack was and it's a four-round fight, the results might very well be the same
I fear Shay is right. Meehan sounds like he had a high workrate for those rounds and was awkward and tough enough to make it through the firestorm a guy like Dempsey brought. Marciano's true forte was the deep waters, where he simply ran his opponents out of gas and crushed them. 4 rounds isn't long enough.
I don’t think anyone would call you crazy for saying that Rocky had a better overall career and resume than Jack but what did he do better than Dempsey? How do you see him stopping Meehan from making this fight go his way?
Well... 1) He fought everyone. Nino Valdez is not the same thing as Harry Wills, and we all know that. 2) He beat great fighters, even if they were a bit past it. 3) Retired undefeated
This is a good argument to ranking him higher than Dempsey all time but I don’t think it shows what Marciano does better than Dempsey with regard to his fighting ability and how he would implement a better strategy than Jack did against Meehan. Dempsey is quicker, more aggressive early on, and much more explosive. Rocky tended to get behind on rounds early on in fights, has he ever finished a tricky intelligent spoiler like Meehan so early in a fight?
I think all of those things are true because he had more confidence in his fighting ability, the reason for it being that the was better.
No Meehan was very good at speed boxing specifically. Him beating Dempsey in a 4 rounder isn't really random. He beat Langford and a host of other ATGs at speed boxing he was much more capable at 4 rounders then boxing proper.
