ali was 29-0 or something before exile. he won title in 20th fight. marciano was 49-0 but didn't win title til 43rd fight. ali had more successful defences than marciano before exile. so to me marciano beat 20 more bums than ali. go figure.

ALI had eleven milionaires bank roling a smooth run to the title, using a gold medle as a springboard goes a long way.

ali beat moore( drew his last fight), 19-3 lavorante (lost last fight), 21-3 jones (won 2 of last 6) and 27-8 cooper to get his shot.

marciano beat 37-0 Lastarza, 34-1 layne, 66-2 Louis (won last 10), and 81-3 (unbeaten in 6 years) mathews to get his shot. go figure.

Ali would beat marciano. He is way to fast and slippery in 64-67.

haha how many fights til he fought them? will we compare records - it's not even close. frazier, foreman, ali woulda stayed unbeaten v marciano's opponents. how many fights did charles lose before facing marciano. marciano ruined him - in his dreams - he was declining fast before he faced him. these guys were all at the end of their careers. frazier was peak so was foreman, norton and so on when ali fought them after an exile. marciano was a great but no highter than 5 on any good list.

i can see you're logic but i have to disagree........it ain't marciano's fault that the level of competion wasn't as great as for others.. but if you want to look at it from a neutral point of view.. you have to consider the level of opponents also..
and not only say hey he is unbeaten no one else is so he is the best..
personally i think THE GREATEST overall as you called it has to be ali.. a way better resume then the rock has..

Then how come no other fighter in any weight class has done it in the past century?

There have been lots of great fighters who came along in weak eras, but still no lineal champion has ever matched the 49-0, or even the 0 during the 20th century.

You can't simply dismiss this acomplishment by citing the opposition being weak.

What truth? That Rocky was a busier fighter prior to winning the belt.

Ali 20 fights in his first 4 years prior to his title shot.
Marciano 40 fights in his first 4 years prior to his title shot.

Ali doesn't need bull**** strawmen arguments like this anyway, **** you for dragging him down with the lamest argument in the history of the boards. This Muhammad Ali and the best you can do..."uh, he only had 20 fights before his title shot."

A gold medel can do a lot to speed up your run to the title in less than 30 fights. Ask Patterson, DLH or Frazier, all won it in less than 30, and most didnt even hit 25 fights yet.

marciano was a great and had great wins and can be anything from 5 in an all-time list (i think he was great but not best of all-time) but the best fighters he fought weren't peak - louis, charles, walcott.
