I heard he ate and breath training, but my god i couldn't really believe he ran 6-7 miles everyday, for 8 years and trained with a 300 pound heavy bag!!!
I still have to wonder about 15-16 miles of roadwork in the week leading up to a fight. It seems excessive and this is generally around the time you start winding down your training, not increasing it. But he was an animal, that we all know.
The miles he ran and the 300 pound bag has to be an exaggeration. He trained like an animal but he’d have nothing left for his fights due to overtraining. Even Jack Johnson wrote about avoiding overtraining. Granted Johnson usually wasn’t to be trusted in the truth department but why lie about avoiding overtraining.
300 pound bag is not an exaggeration but from what I’ve read the running is an exaggeration. He ran plenty but certainly not that much
Marcianos training Listons reach Tex Cobb eats 5 0 tacos You guys pick the oddest historical minutia to say is untrue. Just because you goobers don't have the tenacity & determination to do something doesn' t mean an ALL TIME great couldn't. THAT is what made him great. You stuck in loserville and giveupville will never understand. E'nuff said.
I’m talking about a world championship boxing match. Peaking at the right time. I’m not throwing anything out there as you put it.
It goes against the philosophy of modern training, but Rocky didnt have access to modern conditioning or nutrition knowledge.
But he was trained by Charley Goldman an experienced trainer and former fighter himself who had years of knowledge.
I think in regards to the running thing they may be including his walking. He would run a lot 5-10 area but he would also walk a lot in the day and at night. That may add into the total “running”.
What about the 300 pound bag though? If you look at footage of say Foremam hitting the heavy bag he uses one about the same size as most other boxers, heavyweights that is. And he used to out bloody great big dents in them. Did Rocky hit the bag with any more force than Foreman? I doubt it. And I’m not on about knockouts. That timing, speed and catching opponents with shots not seen by them. I’m on about hitting the heavy bag.
Just because he hit a 300 pound bag (which he did) doesn’t mean he hit as hard as Foreman. Rocky trained for stamina. He knew he could have weighed more and hit slightly harder. But in his mind it was more important to have great stamina. Probably stems from a fight he had with an amateur boxer in his hometown when he returned from the military. He got exhausted and never wanted that to happen again.
