Inspired by - Seamus' recent Dempsey/Hopkins thread This content is protected (http://www.eastsideboxing.com/forum/showthread.php?t=375328) - Bernard's quip that he'd never lose to a white boy - The frequent h2h comparisons on here between Dempsey and Marciano How does this one pan out ? Are Hopkins' chances better, worse or about the same as with Dempsey ?
Hopkins' only chance against Dempsey is if he's able to survive the early onslaught. If he does, he could possibly spring the upset there. He has no such avenue for victory against Rocky. Marciano TKO8 or 9.
I'm a massive fan of the Nard but this ones a fizzer. Marciano hurt people wherever he hit them, on the arms, everywhere. He'd wear Bernard down pretty quick. Rocky wore down some great light heavyweights come small heavyweights who where bigger than Bernard.
His chances are about zero. Against Marciano or Dempsey. IF, (and it's a big if) he manages to somehow go the distance it will be through the most negative means of survival, utterly stinking the place out with grab and stall tactics. But I seriously don't he could manage that over 10, 12 or 15 rounds. Hopkins is way way out of his depth here.
Marciano late KO, Hopkins wins a few early rounds but gets broken down by the relentless onslaught There is a chance of a Hopkins cheat victory though, if he butts Rocky without the ref noticing causing a cut stoppage or trying to fake a DQ
When dream matches are offered up on here, I try to evaluate them technically, but I don't think there's any need for that here. Marciano would absolutely smash Hopkins, imo, very painfully.
Marciano is very good at imposing his kind of fight on who he is fighting. I really see only VERY strong men being able to keep him from imposing his type of fight on them, Hopkins is not of this class. WK, VK, Foreman, Lennox.. this is the type of size and power needed to keep The Rock off you; otherwise he will be in your face. As the weaker of the two I don't see Hopkins as able to force clinches as often as he would like to either. Marciano by Round 11 stoppage with B-Hop in the ropes just being pounded on.
Marciano was a force of nature...he broke bones and ruptured blood vessels...he smashed teeth into gums...he almost killed Carmine Vingo...he hurt you no matter where he hit you... ....take The Rock in this one...
I think Hopkins has been getting a little too much love as of late. Very good fighter no doubt but a little fortunate that he's fighting in the era that he is which has allowed him to carry on for this long. I think it's a bit of a stretch to suggest that he beats a prime beast like Marciano (or Dempsey for that matter). He would give them some trouble with his slick style but would eventually fall. Too much relentless power for him to survive for too long. He would quickly come to the conclusion that it's gonna be a long night with these two "white boys".
