That's true - they genuinely respected one another and in Ali's autobiography he tells of running traffic lights and stop signs to get to the funeral service at the church in time. Ali said that he was closer to Marciano than to any other white fighter. Marciano's brother, Peter, tells of preferring to remember Rocky and Ali having grapefruit for breakfast together and talking about how they could make the world a better place.

The problem I see with the hypothetical comeback of Rocky Marciano in 1959, is that Marciano had been retired since April 1956, his last battle was against Archie Moore on Sept 21 1955. Rocky did state that he was having issues with his back, and that he wanted to spend more time with his family. The comeback would mean a great amount of sacrifice which could cause a distraction to his training, much like the distraction depicted in the fictional movie Rocky III, the press would be hounding Marciano. His body after several earlier ring wars would not allow for Rocky to be in optimal shape. Also in 1959, there would be the emergence of new contenders, Sonny Liston, Cleveland Williams, Eddie Machen, and Zora Folley. Marciano had shown a vulnerability to a right hand, especially against an aging Jersey Joe Walcott and Archie Moore. Just close your eyes, imagine the Ingo Bingo crashing against an onrushing Marciano after evading a Suzi-Q right hand. In 1959, Ingo's confidence was skyrocketing, he just destroyed undefeated no.1 contender Eddie Machen in round 1 on Sept 14 1958 and on June 26 1959, he sent defending champion Floyd Patterson skating to the canvas 5 times enroute to winning the title. This would be an extremely difficult situation for Marciano, should he defeat Ingo, he might have to face Liston or Patterson.
