It depends on which Peter showed up. Peter was not always in shape. But he did have a functional jab, and it took Wlad and Vitali a long time to stop him. That's why I like Rocky via UD or Late round TKO, but it's not a confident pick.
Peter physically was a beast, I will give him that. He had huge clubbing type power and was one strong dude. One of the very few who I saw push Wlad away in a clinch. He was extremely crude and basic, but just by dint of him being a big, strong, tough guy with some rudimentary skill, well it could be an interesting fight. Peter gave Wlad some very rough moments in their first encounter. He's tough and big enough to go into the late rounds against Rocky, and as said, won't have to go looking for Marciano. What sort of damage could he inflict on The Rock during that time? Peter fought guys in a division Marciano (as he was) would not be big enough to legally compete in. Just saying.
Peter can't fight. Good puncher who never learned the technical aspects of the sport. Marciano or any other prime ATG hwt champion takes him to school and beats him up. Peter like many of the hwts from the last 30 years became a contender via the watered down nature of the hwt division. Nearly everyone who could hold their hands up became a contender.
To be perfectly frank about it, one could also label Marciano a 'good puncher who never learned the technical aspects of the sport.' Rocky was always seen as somewhat crude and basic himself. Perhaps he was technically superior to Peter, but this fight won't hinge on the finer points of the game. Basically, the questions asked is whether a relentless, tough tiny guy can beat a huge, plodding, stronger guy in a toe-to-toe encounter. Peter has 60 pounds on Rocky for starters.
You haven't been paying attention? The new thing is to pretend that Marciano was actually an underrated, supremely technical fighter who used every feint, slip, and crouch purposefully and masterfully.
Agreed.. It would be a very physical fight with very little outsmarting going on. In such an instance you'd have to give the noticeably bigger and stronger man the chance. For all his shortcomings, Sam Peter absolutely hammered the shlt out of a good number of big men while taking huge punishment from them as well. Its hard for me to imagine Rocky merely "outslugging" Peter on just heart and raw toughness alone... That stuff can only take a man so far before the laws of physics take over.
Early. Marciano is way too little and non-elusive to survive many rounds with an on-top-of-his-game Peter. Peter is too strong and durable for Marciano to hurt first. Terrible matchup between an ATG light-heavy/cruiserweight tweener sized fighter and a good super-heavy.
Glad you and I of the same mindset. And that is not to take a thing away from Marciano, a far greater all-round fighter than Peter. As you say though, intangibles only go so far.
Indeed my friend.. Marciano was a superb fighter who took what most modern trainers might deem as "nothing" and turned it into one of the greatest heavyweight careers of all time. But at the end of the day you can only build up a certain type of automobile to go so fast or perform so highly. Things might be different if Rocky had exceptional speed and skill ( like Roy Jones ) that he could use to fluster a big heavyweight with.. But if it all comes down to his usual swinging for the fences at close range while taking multiple punches to land a big shot then he's basically fvked against someone who outmatches him physically. I might also pick Bonecrusher Smith to beat him for very similar reasons.
