Dum dum boy quiz. Fill in the blank. Your motivation for butting in and responding to my reply to slender 4 was _______? Or does dum dum boy need multiple choice?
I'll break this down for you. In Shkor's previous fight, prior to his bout with Marciano he was ko'd in ONE MINUTE and 34 SECONDS OF THE FIRST ROUND by Jersey Joe Walcott. Try forming the words with your lips first.
Plus he beat Muriello or however it's spelled. As I said last night, I never thought he beat a big man of any substance, but now we have a starting point it makes fabtasy fights easier for me to picture. Just wish I could see the fight myself.
Shkor was a main event guy in his hometown of Boston. Marciano and Walcott knocked out a good heavyweight in Johnny Shkor who had decent wins and a good knock out percentage. Shkor's win over Johnny Flynn was good because Flynn was on a roll having just beat Lee Q Murry, pat Comisky and Joey Maxim. Then of course Shkor stopped 23 year old Tami Mauriello and was the first do so since Joe Louis. Rusty Payne was a good recent win too just before Walcott beat him. Shkor was at worst a good value fringe guy. He'd been in with Curtis Shepherd, Jimmy Bivins, Joe Baksi, Red Burman, Nathan mann and a championship Joe Louis. None if them could knock him out. Even Louis. The Joe Louis fight was a November 1949 ten rounder non title fight in the Boston garden with a newspaper decision, it featured Joe scoring a knock down so it was no exhibition. I've seen a photo of Shkor landing a good right hand. They fought in competition gloves too. I don't understand why that and other real fights have not went down on Joe Louis's record. If guys are getting knocked down, arenas are sold out, small gloves, no head gear or vests it must be official? Shkor was always a decent talent. good enough to be selected to appear at Yankee Stadium on the undercard of the Joe Louis v Arturo Godoy fight way back when he was 9-0. He won. In those days it took some doing to break into the New York scene there were so many good fighters.
Mauriello was probably top three when Shkor stopped him. Yeah, I would love to see the fight. He supposedly had done success mauling Marciano before getting chopped down. I also think Walcott one shotting him is impressive given his size and reputation for toughness and durability.
I'd just love to see how Rocky fights a respected SHW. We know Dempsey stayed at range until he saw an opening, did Rocky do that or did he push hard from the off to take away the big guys leverage? As well as Walker v Greb this is definitely one of the fights I would most love to see.
