Part of his great defense was his chin. Moore threw a slew of counters that Rocky withstood to deliver his own power punches. He also was really good at parrying punches, and blocking shots.
I'm happy I made a reasonable case for Wilder doing well.. I don't have anyone as a sacred cow who I'm convinced can deny the laws of both logic and physics. When I watch Marciano ,and I've been doing so since the 60's,I see a slow swarmer who has to get inside to be effective. I see him eventually achieving that against past prime opponents, 3 of the best of whom were ex light -heavies. I see a champion who was never proven against a prime big heavyweight of class. I see a champion who was given life and death by a 37 years old Walcott, who sometimes underperformed in big fights. I see a champion who had to pull victory out of the jaws of defeat in some fights. I don't see this clever defensively , well balanced boxer, that his worshippers do. BTW .I picked Marciano.
why cant you just leave it that you agree to disagree, why does the other guy always have to be a moron? he even said he would pick Rocky 60-40, all he is saying is that Wilder may give Rocky some trouble, sheesh atsch
i like wilder tbh, i picked rocky, wilder's got obvious holes in his game and the scott fight left a bad taste, but if you can't get up for an in shape, hard punching, vulnerable heavyweight why are you watching boxing at all? as far as picking against anyone with a punch vs wilder, it didn't go to well for everyone picking stiverne by easy ko, and i try not to make the same mistake twice.
yes I agree he is a interesting watch, would love to see him get in a real tussle and if he falls down then so be it, he wont be the first, he is fun to watch however, well at times he is embarrassing to watch, I have hated some of his showboating, plus it hasn't helped him, but overall he adds to the heavy scene rather than takes from it imo
have you seen the fight with the fat white guy from earlier in his career? showboating in rd 1 is never a good plan, but he was so committed to the strategy he took a count because of it. made me laugh tho.
Exactly. That's why we have to be cautious with Marciano in these fights. Not only did he never ever weigh above 200 but very very few of his opposition did. Our sole point of reference of him against a big HW is Johnny Shkor.
The time that Rocky fought him Joe Louis was not only a real contender but by then not much different in size to Sonny Liston. 213lb. Humphrey Jackson was 254. Perhaps he wasn't a real fighter though. Big Bill Wilson was 229 and at least was a real fighter. Having 87 fights over 11 years. Big Bill went the distance with Cesar Brion, Danny Nardico, Gunarr Barlund so Lastarza and Rocky did well knocking him out. James Pat Connelly was said to be a tall big heavyweight for the day too.
If an appreciable amount of punches are getting through your guard and landing on your chin ,by the very definition of the term , you do not have a "great defence".
Connolly was 6'5" 213lbs. Marciano had ko'd him in the amateurs ,but been made a mug of by Connolly in a sparing session later.Marciano was 10-0-0 Connnolly 8-5-0. Bill Wilson had been ko'd by Abel Cestac in 3rds,this was earlier in the same year Marciano fought Wilson. 172lbs Nardico stopped Wilson in 5rds of their second fight which was 8 months after the Marciano v Wilson match. Wilson was also stopped by Buddy Scott,Teddy Randolph and Joe Matissi. Marciano did not ko him ,a minute and a half into the first round Wilson sustained a deep cut and the fight had to be halted at 1.50. "The bout was stopped because of a deep cut over Wilson's left eye. Marciano concentrated on using his left hook in the brief fight. The crowd of 3,351 booed the quick ending because Wilson was a willing and strong opponent, but the fight had to be stopped because of the severity of Bill's injury. " Non puncher Lastarza ko'd Wilson. Jackson was a joke.
