Thanks for the info. So Shkor, big Bill Willson, Jackson, Connolly, Joe Louis (when he fought him) and Savold (when he fought him) were all modern sized heavyweights? That's not as bad as I thought considering that period is not known for producing big heavyweights. Vingo, Connolly and Shkor each between 6'4-6'5" so the height and reach in itself was no problem. Each of these fights represented a fair match at each particular point in Marcianos development. Compare this with the rediculous guys George Foreman fought as #1 contender to Joe Frazier in 1972!! Joe Murphy gordwin with his eye watering 1-14-1 record. Clarence "boom-boom" Boone and his 3-24-1 stats. 15-5 199lb Ted Gullick who was decent but outweighed by 21 pounds. 4-15 Terry "very sorry" Sorrell, Miguel Paez who won 48 of 76 fights in south America. This was ludicrous. We can scoff at Big Bill Willson now but he could obviously handle himself and hold his own at a decent level. Yes he was found out a few times but made a lot of rematches and must have been in high demand as a stiff opponent. Willson fought 17 times in 1952 alone! Bill won a lot more than he lost scoring 47 knockouts within 57wins from 80 odd fights. Even if all Bills KO wins were against the guys Cleveland Williams was brought up on its not bad going. It wasn't for Williams. Has Wilder fought many men like that yet? A winning blue collar pro from the c list circuit.
Shkor was a world rated HW if I recall. He definitely fits the mold of a SHW fighter. So Rocky has proven he can beat a big man, the question is just how good does the big man have to be until he beats Rocky? A fringe top ten guy wasn't good enough which rules out the likes of Thompson, Dmitrenko, Ustinov etc. But it's a huge leap going from Dmitrenko to Lewis. Obviously somewhere in that leap is a Wilder.
Hmm, that's the 64 dollar question. The point is size in itself is not the hurdle. He has some form here.
The big men Marciano fought were either novices or well chewed trial -horses,the fact that he beat them does not mean he beats a rated superheavyweight. The Wilson fight never got going a deep cut stopped the fight inside 2 minutes of it's starting. Savold a modern sized heavyweight? 6'1" 200lbs . When he began Foreman was matched tougher than Marciano imo. 4th fight Foreman =Wepner18-4-2 .Marciano = Quinn 8-0-0 8th fight Foreman =Davila21-15-0 .Marciano =Cardone 0-1-0 12thfight Foreman=Forte 19-21-2 .Marciano= Pretzie 9-5-0 15thfight Foreman=OHalloran18-5-2.Marciano=Evans18-7-0 16th fightForeman =Peralta77-5-8 .Marciano=Mogard17-9-1 17th fight Foreman=Woody13-2-0. Marciano=Haft13-7-0 Haft was under 175lbs. 21st fight Foreman=Chuvalo 59-15-2.Marciano=Dominic 18-10-0
In his previous fight 6 months earlier Shkor had been kod in a minute and a half by Walcott , and he had won just 3 of his last eleven fights. He was not ranked.
You can cherry pick certain opponents as much as you want the fact is nobody fought worse opponents than George Foreman did for a full year as #1 contender. it was rediculous. Marciano fought and beat a lot of the top ten by the time he became champion. His credentials as both a rated fighter and champion is beyond reproach. Deontay Widers last fight before winning a belt was against a guy who lost 16 times Jason Gavern. He'd been knocked down and knocked out multiple times.
As far as things have been seen, Wilder hasn't showed he can hang with the elite guys while Marciano showed us all that he's an ATG
I'm not being selective you are . Paez had beaten Bonavena and Corletti the year previously and had just stopped Lovell for the Argentinian title. Marciano's manager was the matchmaker for MSG ! He couldn't have had it any sweeter
Only mcvey can claim Wilder would beat Marciano. There's no doubting that Wilder's 83 inch reach would pose serious problems for Marciano. But, that's as far as it goes. His power would not trouble Marciano who we all know had an iron chin.
Here is the post that has my pick in it,perhaps you should have read it before making your post? "I agree Wilder is still untested at top level and Molina staggered him badly twice.Wilder has a fast hard jab and an 83" reach, could he connect enough times to get Rocky bleeding? Could Rocky sand bag that skinny waist ,slowing Wilder down and making him a more static target. Wilder is a long puncher he doesn't do much at close range, could Rocky get under that Albatross wingspan and,"kill the body"? I'll pick Marciano 60/40" Maybe change your name from BLUNDELL to BLUNDER?
Bonavena was disqualified for a low blow. That's not a win. Corletti was all used up, he never won another fight. Lovel? Who did he ever beat? He was losing more than he was winning too. Wasn't he spider rico? Paez was a handpicked former lightheavyweight who was unranked and thoroughly mismatched versus Foreman.
Yes it is. Corletti had gone 10rounds with Bugner 7 months earlier. Former light heavyweight? FIVE of Marciano's best wins were over former light heavies. Five of his early opponents WERE LIGHTHEAVIES One LIGHT HEAVY took him the distance TWICE and many thought deserved the distance in one of the fights. NINE of his opponents were UNDER 180 POUNDS! Still want to talk about former light heavies? How about these ones? Mathews Lowry Charles C*ckell Moore Now do you want to address some of the things you 've stated on Marciano's behalf? Like him koin'g Wilson?
