Povitkin was a walking statue. No imagination as a fighter. A fighter whose name is already lost in boxing history. Even worse however is he had the absolute worst style to allow him to be successful against an ATG swarmer. No lateral movement, no great defensive boxing ability. Marciano uses him as a heavy bag until the referee stops the fight around round eight.
How good Povetkin really was or is can be debated; no doubt he was a skilled, solid pro with an Olympic gold medal. Unfortunately for him, however, is that he dwelt in Vlad’s shadow and what he is known for most is being completely emasculated by his very own trainer publicly, loudly and regularly saying that he was nowhere near or ready to challenge for the undisputed heavyweight championship of the world.
This. Marciano would completely crush Povetkin. He does everything better than Povetkin. Povetkin never even realized his potential as a pro due to laziness.
I can see the reasons why people might pick Marciano over Povetkin but the idea that he was somehow more skilled than Povetkin is laughable. Sometimes I wonder if people ever even watch the footage. Marciano's strengths are in his huge intangibles - stamina, heart, chin, relentlessness. His skills are above average at best. Povetkin has an all-round high level skillset.
