Let's take Marciano of '53 against Cooper that showed up for the fight against Holyfield.. Let's discuss I love a good slugfest but this one would be fun to watch! Let's discuss :bbb
Cooper was dangerous but Rocky liked that style. Also, Cooper was small HW. Rocky by KO in an exciting fight
Cooper starts fast thinking he can score a quick KO against one of smaller fighters Cooper has faced in a long time. Their height is similar, Cooper has a much longer reach but he would not put that to good use... Marciano would have the leverage advantage on the inside with his shorter arms, Cooper would need more room to land with power. Cooper would have about 25-30 Lbs on Rocky. I don't think it would be an issue. Cooper was more of a CW anyway (when the limit was 190). The extra weight was mostly belly. I think Rocky eventually stops Cooper but it's exciting for as long as it last.
Cooper at heavyweight was a bigger man than Rocky. On one of the better nights of his career, he showed up at a lean and muscular 215 lbs against Evander Holyfield.. That's a good 30 lbs over Rocky's best weight. He was also about an inch and half taller than Marciano.. I concur that Rocky should be favored as I feel him to be a superior inside fighter with a more consistent track record of going the long haul in long distance fights. But Cooper on the evenings that he fought Holyfield, Moorer and Mercer would have been tough for a lot of heavy's, and I suspect Marciano will have to go to hell and back to win this.
Dangerous fight for Rocky if a focused, in shape Cooper show up… but that caveat is a longshot.
Not much wrong with the Cooper who showed up against Willie Dewitt, That Uppercut still makes one Wince.. It might prove a very useful weapon against a smaller crouching opponent, But in this you have Mr Inconsistent Against The Ultimate Mr Consistent Therefore the wise Money would i feel be on Rocky to Put Cracks into Berts Confidence and Gradually Pound those Cracks Into Fissures In Berts Resolve.. If Don ****ell could Take a Pounding to Half Way Then Maybe the Bigger Bert could Manage that on a Good Day , Maybe Rocky Circa 9th for Me
If Bert Cooper came out smoking I feel he'd be able to give Marciano a good go for a couple rounds but by around the 3rd or 4th round after some furious action Cooper would start to break down from Marciano's attack and Marciano takes him out in 6 rounds or less.
Cooper was a huge waste of talent. The guy that fought Dewitt, Tillman, Mercer and many others was a killer. No management, guidance, hard drugs, ect. Another of the classic lost causes. Much stronger, bigger and harder hitting than Rocky, if focused it would be a very dangerous match up for Marciano who never fought anyone remotely like him.
Marciano probably knocks him out in 1 or 2 rounds. Holyfield had him down in the 1st round with a body punch. I think Rocky would add one to the chin !
If I had the dedication of a Wladimir Klitchko or Evander Holyfield I'd by a hell of a fighter as well... too many "ifs" man. If my Aunt had nuts she'd be my Uncle... we all know that Cooper ain't getting the job done against any top HW. He gave Mercer, Holyfield, and Moorer fits but do you remember the reults of these fights? He went 0-3 and was stopped twice. He was also down multiple times and took a lot of punishment. Mercer had been fighting pro for about a week when he took on Cooper. Yes, he has a stoppage win over Orlin Norris at CW but have you seen this fight? He didn't put Norris down... Norris hurt his knee. I like watching Cooper fight but he was a trial horse at best. Sometimes he wasn't even that. He did well for one round against Bowe then gave up because he knew he couldn't go much longer, LTKOby2. He quit after two rounds vs. Foreman, LTKOby2 in between the 2nd and 3rd round. Coffee, Hipp, and Dewitt? Who gives a shlt? Hey, that rhymed. :yep
I guess you're right because if Rocky had fought large, young, talented, hard hitting heavyweights we might have a different take on him as well ..
No doubt that Carl Williams, Mercer, Bowe, Foreman, Holyfield, Moorer, and other guys Cooper fought were good and some even great... but I feel pretty certain that we all agree on a few things... Marciano would show up in shape and would not quit when the going got tough. It's easy to just blame every bad performance a guy like Cooper has on his "out of the ring" lifestyle... maybe the guy just got his butt kicked in some of those losses. He had everything to gain with a win over Carl Williams... Williams had him beat from the start and eventually stopped him.
Hookie, while I agree with you on many points, and agree that Rocky takes this, I must add that Cooper was very dangerous in his short prime (except for big HW's like Foreman or Bowe). He also scored few good wins over amateur stars (Tillman and De Witt), future WBO cruiser champion Booze, 37-1-1 Fulilangi, and 25-1 future WBA title challenger Joe Hipp. His best win at HW was Orlin Norris, future world cruiser champion (22-1 at that time), who had wins over Page, Ferguson and Snipes. Norris went on to beat McCall and old Tucker. Cooper had good list of wins till 27 when he started to decline seriously. But you're right - against the best of the best he always lost, even when the fights were competitive.
